Digging out that OLD RED BOOK...You know, D&D BASIC...

i say the same thing. the travesty of what D&D has become is appalling.

but to comfort myself. i claim d02 ain't D&D. and then i feel better.
Dungeons & Dragons [current edition] is the only true D&D. All previous editions are just attempts to acheive this level of excellence.

One of the most memorable nights of gaming I had was plaing an "iron man" session with the basic rules using Keep on the Borderlands. 3d6 for abilities, no adjusting, you got one roll for HP and you had to keep it.
I'd love to do this. I definitely would love to revisit Basic D&D for a game session or two. I don't think I could stand a full campaign of it, but a short adventure would be awesome.

I agree, diaglo. It's pretty much a different game. The rules in OD&D were not so great, but the immersion factor was far better than in the current ed, which is just about the opposite. I like them both, for different reasons. I also liked 2E when it was out, but the rules/settings bloat in 2E was pretty bad. 3E is starting to get that way.

YAY! I lost most of my oldest RPG stuff during a flood, so I am just now eBaying to collect products from the good old days. It's enlightening to look at some of the old material, and see how far the D&D rules have come.

Check out www.nobleknight.com good deals on OOP books & great customer service. :)

If you have this old set, pull it out and run a module for a night or two. Seriously.

I pull the old Basic and Expert rules out about twice a month, have done so for the last 20+ years, and plan to continue doing so until I'm dead or no one wants to play with me anymore. It is, and always was a simple, elegant, and fun rule-set.

Funny, but it was 24 years later that I found out variable weapon damage was an optional/variant rule. Core/RAW says all PC attacks do 1d6.

My Basic and Expert D&D rule books sit on a book shelf next to my bed.

Yeah, but I need to see the books in my hands. It's a nostalgia thing.

That's what my printer is for. :)

Actually, has anyone else noticed that it's not fun to use old books (and comics)? I always feel dirty when I'm flipping through the pages of an old book or comic. Like the years have taken a toll on the paper. It takes me multiple hand washing attempts to get that feel off.

Of course, I do have an aversion to getting dirty so any slight amount of dust leaves me wanting a shower. I may just be a freak.

My friend still has the Red, Blue, Green and Black boxes in excellent shape. We do break them out from time to time, just for fun. To laugh at the rules instead of playing it :p

Seriously. Part of it has to do with the translation though ..
