Dimension Door Clarification

Back in post 3 or 4, when I made this point, I went through my logical chain of reasoning to arrive at this conclusion and I was 99% sure someone was going to respond with, "No duh, it says right on Page xx of the PHB you can't make AoO's if you can't take an action."

I still think someone is going to come along at some point and say that, but at least this topic has shown that even if it is kind of an obvious point it's still one that has caused a little head-scratching.

What about a character with Combat Reflexes? The feat allows you to make attacks of opportunity before you have an action in combat.

I would say that with combat reflexes, yes, without, no. Good catch Elethiomel.

From the Rules of the Game:
"Aggressive Nonactions: There's only one activity that falls into this category: the attack of opportunity. An attack of opportunity is similar to the attack action. In general, if you cannot use a standard action during your turn, you also cannot make an attack of opportunity during someone else's turn. When the notes on conditions in Part One say that you cannot act (for example, when stunned), you cannot make an attack of opportunity.

It's worth noting here that to threaten a space on the battlefield you must be able to make an armed attack into that space (see Rules of the Game: All About Attacks of Opportunity). If you cannot use at least a standard action you cannot make an armed attack into any space."

thanks all, good discussion. and a hat-tip to phindar for the head-scratching comment- validates the question a bit.

so this has basically turned me off of shadowdancers. "ohhh, i can dimension door through the shadows and arrive basically dazed!"
