Dire Hyena?

BLACKDIRGE

I know this is an odd request but I need stats on a Dire hyena. Using the stats for a dire wolf to start with what changes would be neccessary for a dire hyena. Although Hyenas are dog like they are more closely related to bears than wolves and shouldn;t just have straight dire wolf stats. I think they should be a bit stronger, a bit slower and perhps a different special attack other than trip, crushing bite for example.

Any other ideas would be appreciated?

Off the top of my head:

Give them +2 Strength, -2 Dexterity, and -5' Move. Remove the Trip special attack, and increase the bite damage die from d8 to d10.

How's that?

Having considered this in the past I think that Dire Wolves & Dire Hyenas (Hyeanadons in earlier rules) need to have the exact same statistics... because normal Wolves & Hyenas have the same stats, as per the Summon Monster tables (2nd-level, on PH p. 258).

Although, an argument could be made for using Dire Lion stats, since earlier rulesets had Gnolls with Hyeanadon companions, and they've been replaced by "Dire Lions" (MM p. 105). Or, average the stats between the two.

Yeah, that sounds about right. In place of the trip maybe improved grab with a crushing attack.

Thanks
