What happens if a disarm attempt ties? The rules say "beat the defender". Does it really mean "beat the defender in an opposed attack roll"? The rules only say what happens with a tied skill check. Does it really mean "skill or attack check"?


Disarm:

Step 2: Opposed Rolls. You and the defender make opposed attack rolls with your respective weapons....
Step Three: Consequences. If you beat the defender, the defender is disarmed.

Opposed Checks:

In an opposed check, the higher result succeeds, while the lower result fails. In case of a tie, the higher skill modifier wins. If these scores are the same, roll again to break the tie.

It seems that your attack roll in this case must exceed that of the defender. Skill modifiers are nonexistent in this specific case.

Seems to me that if you tie, you didn't beat the defender.

I'd say "beat the defender" means just that. Tie goes to the defender.

So in the case of opposed attack checks a tie goes to the defender, but in the case of opposed skill checks, a tie goes to the higher modifier?

It seems to me that an exception like that would warrant being called out in the relavant text. It also seems unnecessarily inconsistant, even for WotC.

Not that I'm saying this is right, but for the few times we have used it and had to resolve this situation, we've treated the defender's opposed attack roll as an AC. That is, if you equal or beat the defender's attack roll, then you were successful.
