Discussing problems with D&D/d20 rules...

I think there's a big market need for Wind in the Willows d20.

Oh, wait. Wrong troll.

Uh...oh, here's the response to KK.

If I wanted to play Gimpmaster, I'd play Gimpmaster, not some reconstituted version of it on a game world whose setting books read more like bad history texts.

Perhaps I should visit the Harn boards and explain to them why D&D is sooooo much better than Harnmaster and Kalamar is the perfect campaign setting because the gods are so cool they don't even have names, just titles.

this thread is like a trainwreck....

I can't stop looking! My favorite quotes so far by order of appearance:

1) "Shhh... He's gonna bump the thread a handful of times even without anyone posting. Don't encourage him by engaging him in conversation!

Erm... Howdy, Kaptain!" -- BY MARK ( CMG )

I too have learned this the hard way, Mark.

2) "As a side note, doesn't anyone else think that "silkworm" 's avatar at the harn boards looks.. a little bit suspicious? (In an Austin Powers kind of way)" -- BY NUMION

Well, Kaptain Karrot didn't get me to go the Harn Message board, but you did! I'd change that right away if it were me.

3) "Seemingly- a constant need for affirmation." - BY FURN_DARKSIDE, responding to "Can somebody remind me what the actual point of this thread was again? " BY BAGPUSS

If KK has reached "Gaming Narvana" with Harn, why can't he just enjoy it? Do I need to go start pro d20 threads on the Harn Message Boards? I'm all for expressing your opinions, but KK's hard sell is a real turn off for me. I'm actually LESS likely to check out Harn than before reading this three long Harn threads he has started, and had once actually been considering buying the ORC centric d20 supplement they publish.

4) Hong's image of a can of SPAM. That is what this post was you know. Again! PS -- I love you still, Hong.

5) "I don't feel comfortable around people who aren't geeks." -BY CELEBRIM

6) "...Characters on Harn get their heads cut off ALL the time and don't even think twice about it..." - Basically this entire FAKE/Spoof post by ERSTWHILE ( 3 posts ) was very sophmoric. But very funny.

Thanks for the entrtainment folks!

I too, was amused by those comments you mention, but as to my various pro-Harn threads actually stopping you from buying a Harn product? I doubt it. People who say things like that on the internet were never going to buy anything, anyway.

Since there is no "sell" except my "hard" sell (CGI, Harn's publisher, couldn't publicize their way out of a paper bag, LOL), if public awareness of Harn is to be heightened, it's up to enthusiastic converts like me to spread the good word however and whereever we can. No one else will. But we are not professional publicists, and to hold us to those standards is silly.

Since Harn is so obscure, and d20 so popular, it makes sense to come here and let people know about Harn, especially since the Harn setting is rules independent and there are dual statted HarnMaster/d20 adventure sourcebooks available.

Then you need to get some experience with publicity.

Although controversy works and attracts attention, on an open forum, it's only going to attract criticism of the system involved, and (I'd like to believe) that most gamers are cynical enough to hear both sides of a story before buying. And you've made one side of the story (the critical side) much louder.

What might have worked better was posting something about "hey, has anyone thought of a good way to >insert something harnmaster does well and d20 does badly< ?", with a followup later that says "well, now that I think of it, harnmaster does that quite well - anyone know how to integrate it into d20?".

I have to agree with Saeviomagy. I don't think you are getting as good press here as you could if you didn't sound like a saleman.

Okay, a lot of people are saying I sound like a salesman...

I have an extensive background in sales, being a master of the "hard sell", and perhaps this does tend to creep into my writing and speech patterns without me being aware of it. It's not my intention to sound like a bad infomercial, LOL.

I thought I was just being enthusiastic about something I love and want to share... I can't help gushing about Harn, just like I gushed about Spycraft right after it came out (which got me a lot less flak here than Harn, presumably because it's d20). People accused me then of working for AEG, LOL, and now I'm accused of being a CGI pitchman! People, when I love something, I gush... (get that sick mental image out of your head!). I think it's because I usually hate everything that when something that meets or exceeds my expectations comes along, I'm so excited I can't control myself and must sing its praises night and day! :D

Please don't misconstrue anything I said as being anything other than sheer, unbridled enthusiasm at finding my personal "gaming nirvana" in Harn and HarnMaster. ;)

Funny how life can throw you a curve, eh? I'm just impressed you started posting about things you have actually read... ;)

You cut me to the quick, sir! My honor, much like Mick Jagger, demands satisfaction... En garde! :D

Shall I use d20 combat rules, while you use Harnmaster...?

*snicker, snicker*

Don't lose your head! :D
