Discussion of Scotley's upcoming 4e Swashbuckler Game

Sorry, Lou, haven't you been paying attention? I've already posted one more attack than I should have, so my last previously posted attack should occur now. Isn't that correct, Scotley? :)

renau1g, I didn't really get the import of your post, but since you mentioned Paragon powers I guess it's not something that Manous needs to worry too much about at the moment, eh? ;)

Yeah, it's more just pointing out one very effective tactic defenders can use is a catch-22. If monster attacks me they're screwed, if they attack the ally they'd screwed.

So basically in the example if they attack the paladin they're screwed because they take a huge penalty to hit and if they attack the paladin's allies they're screwed because they still take a penalty to hit (from a mark) and then take the radiant damage from the paladin's mark.

So I have a question for you 4E guru's...isn't 4E combat supposed to be simpler than 3.x combat? Because so far it looks pretty similar.

It's...more different then simpler I would say. There's more options for a fighter in 4e then in PF/3.5e (which was mostly Do I Power Attack? Do I trip?), but wizards have less options (especially as you level up). There's a heavier focus on strategic battles as there are more push/slide/pull effects that let you move enemies into more advantageous positions or into harmful effects (like a fire).

The biggest change I see is as you move up the levels. There's few spells that affect stats like in 3.5e so you don't have to spend time recalculating anything for Bull's Strength, Divine Might, etc. It's not usually a big problem in PbP because you can take a while to post, it's tougher at the table when everyone's waiting on you.

There are some simplifications. I like the 4 defenses and a simple unified 50/50 chance saves against most effects. That's way smoother than the older save system. The other simplifications are mostly on the DM side. The monster powers are a lot like the character powers, but their options list is much shorter than in earlier editions. Fewer creatures have reach. Encounters, traps and skill challenges are all pretty easy to put together on the DM side relative to earlier editions as well. Iterative attacks are largely gone which I guess is simpler too, but there are still ways to squeeze in extra attacks and targets. For most powers that effect multiple targets you only roll one damage total.

So did Lucien kill the orc? If not, he will shift and Ali will shift into that spot and attack the same orc.

If the orc is dead, then Ali will attack the orc in front of Manous.

You almost feel soory for the orc at R13. First a dwarf charges him and hits. Then a swordmage charges him, hits, and marks him. Then a paladin charges him, hits, and marks him. The orc will be hard-pressed to keep track of who he needs to attack!
