How about Calm Emotions?

Calm Emotions
Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting]
Level: Brd 2, Clr 2, Law 2
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Area: Creatures in a 20-ft.-radius spread
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 round/level (D)
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: Yes

This spell calms agitated creatures. You have no control over the affected creatures, but calm emotions can stop raging creatures from fighting or joyous ones from reveling. Creatures so affected cannot take violent actions (although they can defend themselves) or do anything destructive. Any aggressive action against or damage dealt to a calmed creature immediately breaks the spell on all calmed creatures.

This spell automatically suppresses (but does not dispel) any morale bonuses granted by spells such as bless, good hope, and rage, as well as negating a bard’s ability to inspire courage or a barbarian’s rage ability. It also suppresses any fear effects and removes the confused condition from all targets. While the spell lasts, a suppressed spell or effect has no effect. When the calm emotions spell ends, the original spell or effect takes hold of the creature again, provided that its duration has not expired in the meantime.

Now it doesn't dispess confusion it will however suppress its effects for 1 rd/CL. Should buy some time to finish the encounter at least. Vice the duration of the umber hulks's gaze (8 rds).

I'm not sure your party could continue fighting normally under the effects of this spell. I suppose it depends on your definition of "defend themselves" vs. "cannot take violent actions...or do anything destructive."

As a DM, I'd rule that you can engage in melee anything that is attacking you in melee, but that's about it. Offensive spellcasting or moving forward to attack a foe that isn't attacking you would be right out.

It'd certainly turn into an interesting encounter.

Yes but they will be able to do something - like support work. A bard could inspire, a cleric/druid could heal or bless, etc. Better than just standing there all ga ga. and it's only a 2nd level spell.

And if they are attacked they can defend themselves (I read that as fight back, they just can't initiate an attack). IMO the take damage would apply to from the caster like most other spells of its type, but it doesn't clearly state that.

So if anybody makes their save (I wouldn't allow a confused character to voluntarily fail their save) then the Calm Emotions may not last very long.

Especially if the Umber Hulk saves.
