Dispelling Fly

Think of it this way:

I have three tons of supplies I need to deliver to a castle at the bottom of a steep cliff. The nearest passage down is a days jouney south.

Can I grab a local animal, chain a bunch of supplies to it, cast fly on it, toss it over the edge, dispel the fly, and shove the crates of supplies after it? And expect the whole bundle to float gently down a few thousand feet undamaged?
That's clever, but blatant abuse of the spell's design. I would probably ad hoc that you wouldn't be able to float with more that you maximum weight limit; when you exceeded that, you'd plummet. Why not just design a custom spell called mass feather fall?

People often neglect to notice that featherfall affects 1 target per level (and in fact in 3rd ed affected all targets within 10ft of the caster).

So it IS mass feather fall.

Given that, it seems petty to stop people from saving falling companions in more interesting and tension filled ways (ie - grabbing them when they fall past). I'm personally not a beliver in "magic should never facilitate a clever plan or action"

You're forgetting that the feather fall-like property of fly only lasts for 1d6 rounds as stated by the spell description. So at most you'd only float down 360'. You plummet any remaining distance.

Another tangent.....

Does Fly work underwater? Suppose your mage had a Water Breathing spell cast on him along with Fly. Would Freedom of Movement be needed also?

Just curious.....

Ok, now for the next question. Somebody has Dispelled your Fly spell. You are sinking gradually to the ground. Something occurs that increases your weight - perhaps a companion fell past you and you grabbed them.

There is nothing in the spell description indicating a weight limit.

If I remember correctly, the Feather Fall spell only allows each recipient to carry up to his or her maximum load. So if that falling companion puts you over your maximum load, you both fall.

Except for your speed is impeded as normal for underwater travel, unless you've got freedom of movement. Yea, sure would work fine.
