Dispelling Haste with Slow. How does it work?

Shin Okada

1: Slow automatically dispel Haste.
2: If the target fails in will save, he is affected by Slow and thus Haste is dispelled.
3: Need dispel check as per Dispel Magic spell.

Which is correct? And if you know where to find the written rule about it, would yo please tell me? Thanks in advance.

1.

Page 154 of the PHB, under spells with opposite effects or right here

From the SRD

Spells with Opposite Effects: Spells that have opposite effects apply normally, with all bonuses, penalties, or changes accruing in the order that they apply. Some spells negate or counter each other completely. This is a special effect that is noted in a spell's description.

According to the Sage (1) is the correct answer.
Slow negates haste - the target gets no saving throw and no SR roll is needed.

(I don't remember where I saw that ruling.)

It's in the FAQ. (Hopefully in the revised PH, too....)

It's in the current PHB!! So why shouldn't it be in the new as well ?

Your quote from the PHB doesn't answer the question the original poster asked.

Slow and Haste "negate or counter each other completely", certainly.

But Slow has a saving throw. Does the spell negate Haste completely if the target saves?

The spell description says it dispels Haste. Does that mean it uses the mechanics of Dispel Magic?

Those questions aren't answered in the PHB, and both are perfectly reasonable assumptions to make.

It's not until the FAQ that it's cleared up.

Current PHB? Where?

*Edit

Oh sorry. Now I see what you mean. As Hypersmurf said, I have read P.154 and felt that the mechanism of "dispel" is not clearly covered by that rule.

I though it was obvious that since slow say it "counters and dispels" it was the mere casting of the spell that did so.

On the dispelling part. A dispel spell only actually dispels anything if you succeed the caster level check. But slow says it dispels haste, so why do anyone question that it's automatic.
