Divine Metamagic from Complete Divine Question?

There is a feat in the Complete Divine called Divine Metamagic that allows a cleric to pick a metamagic feat and then convert some of their turning attempts (one turning attempt for each level of metemagic spell levels +1 turning attempt). For example, Maximize Spell would take 4 turning attempts. Quicken would take 5 turn attempts.

The feat says that the Spell doesn't actually change spell levels, you can use the Turning Attempts at any time to any spell you currently have.

Anyhow, one of my PC characters has reached 18th level and has this feat for Maximize Spell. Does anyone see where this is going? Basically the character is trying to Maximize his 7th, 8th and 9th levels spells.

Does this seem wrong to anyone else? No other feat allows you to Maximize any level spell, does it? I suppose my gripe is that typically, you wouln't be able to Maximize a spell over 6th level, why should you be able to do it with this feat?

Can someone help out here?

Well, Sudden Maximize allows you to maximize any spell. It is limited to once per day however.

How many turning attempts does he have?

He's got 8 now. He can do it twice a day. I know that it doesn't seem like a lot, but Maximised Fire Storm gives him a 60' X 60' square (or he can shape it) area, that he can do 108 hp of damage with a DC of 27 for 1/2 (54hp)!

That's just a 8th level. Who knows what he could Maximize for 9th!

What do you think?

Yes, the feat allows you to maximize the spell and other spells of level 6-9, ya it can be a bit strong but them the rules.

Is there any other way for any other type of caster, that can duplicate this type of thing?

There is something called Sudden Metamagic in the Miniature's Handbook and it works similar, saying that the spell level isn't affected, and seemingly has no restriction to what level you can cast.

What does the Epic Level Handbook say about applying Metamagic to high level spells? Is there a reference in there?

I just don't think that you should be able to do this. It is fairly unbalancing. I'm just looking for a places in the rules that speak to this situation.

Maximise? Man, they're swinging low. How about Persistent or Quicken? That's where the real insanity begins!

Like in FR, using the Time domain. Persistent Time Stop.

The Sudden feats are also in Complete Arcane.

There's also an Epic feat which lessens spell slot costs to a minimum of 1, so you could have an 8th level Maximized spell in a 9th level slot.

Ok, so it's in the rules, but doesn't it seem to break the spirit of the rules?

I have a group who will take a mile for every inch I give, and I generally have to be careful that they don't let the rules dictate some type of insanely overpowered abuse.

This type of thing may be in the rules, but with Extra Turning, and Charisma enhancements, it can get out of hand.

My guy usually only casts Maximized Flame Strikes, but Firestorm does 18d6 to 36 10'X10' blocks. That's nuts.

Then again, I'm looking at the SRD, and there doesn't seem to be that many damaging cleric spells at 7th through 9th.

Destruction isn't too bad, Fire Storm is Bad, Mass Inflict Critical Wounds isn't too bad. Energy Drain takes 8 levels. I wonder what spells are in the other books....

No, Cleric spells aren't that damaging. That's what Sor/Wiz spells are for.

You are right, I don't have to worry about this now, unless the Wizard picks up the Sudden Metamagic feat. I found that you can't apply Metamagic to Epic level spells.

I think it breaks the spirit of the rules somehow. I'd be interested to hear what the Sage would say on this one.

Thanks guys, if you have other insights, I will appreciate those too.
