Duck back into the dungeon... the PC's know it, the ambushers might not. Find a good spot to counter-ambush THEM, or maneuver around behind them and escape.

Not included in the spoiler setup is the fact that there's no raise dead/ressurrection in this game.
That wouldn't make any difference to my answer at all. I usually play the game to be heroic, have fun and take risks. Death is one of those.

I presume that 'your money' includes magical equipment.

Wow. I guess I'm stingy... they don't really have a lot in the way of magic items, yet.

They did just find a cool heavy mace with a head like a friggin' FIST-- how cool is that?-- but they haven't ID'ed it yet.

Spoiler-- seriously, don't read it if you haven't voted:

Part of my interest is in seeing how many people break the boundaries of the question. The setup doesn't truly end with "Your money or your life!" as other folks have pointed out.

In terms of keeping the game fun and interesting, it's up to the players to break frame on this kind of straightforward setup. Running, tactical withdrawal, bluffing, bargaining-- from the DM's side of the screen, these are the sorts of things I want to see out of the players.

These kinds of things bring a verisimilitude to the game. I don't enjoy killing PCs, but I want them to think like their characters-- not players at the table simply concerned (or not) with scribblings of graphite on a piece of paper.

I think the question is too situation dependant to give a blanket answer to. As others have mentioned it would depend on the condition of the party at the moment and the resources they had going for them. If they all had a means to fly or turn invisible (not out of the question for their level) then they might reasonably expect to be able to flee with few repriasals. Failing that, I think the "run back into the dungeon" thing is very viable.

And it is also a question of the PC's too. Most of the characters I play would probably put themselves at risk for the group if they chose to fight. But, a couple of campaigns ago, I ran a real bastard of a Peck (is there any other kind?) who would have quaffed his potion of Invisibility and let the others fend for themselves.

When you run this thing though, you simply MUST have the giant say (in a thick Romanian accent), "I didn't have to miss you know..."

I read the setup before voting as the situation really determines the answer to the question (5 goblins asking for your money or your life, is far different then a red dragon). Upon reading the situation I voted for your life, because like several other people in this thread, the first though I had was to retreat back into the dungeon as a hill giant would have a tough time in a typical dungeon.

I voted "Your life", because that's what I'd answer. Then I'd run like a chicken.

Seriously, though, my reasons are similar to PCat: I play to be someone who punishes robbers, not to be someone who gets robbed. The odds you describe are bad, but not so bad as not to be remedied by some good tactics and a little die-rolling luck.

And I mostly don't mind rolling up new characters :)

answered before reading the spoiler. but even after reading the answer would be the same.

money.

i play my character as a living breathing entity. no way he'd want to die. nor see his friends die.

but... he'd have to have some way to know the guys weren't just gonna kill him anyway after taking the stuff. if they were. he'd definitely fight to the bitter end.

as a referee of this situation. i know the players would fight. not b/c i would do anything to provoke them. they just metagame too much and think i would never throw something at them too powerful. even tho i have. and they have had their hats handed to them on a plate before.
