DM Banned Barbarians.. so, Ranger or Fighter?

Wow :) Thanks for all the quick replies!

My DM isn't too keen on allowing variant rules, or switching stuff around (he's just learning right now.. I used to DM but now can play at last! :) ).

Thanks for all the replies! :) But, I've made up my mind (for the most part) to go with a fighter.

Thanks again,

Just tell him it's a varient rule written by the guy who helped write the game. How much closer to official do you actuially need?

So, I guess he won't allow you to take Rage as a feat? Cause trhat would be great for a fighter.

Go ranger/fighter.

If you don't want to deal with spellcasting, go Rgr5 (which will may get you one spell a day, but that's easy to ignore without feeling like you're missing out on half the class's goodies), and the rest Ftr. That'll get you two favored enemies, a decent amount of skill points for Spot, Wilderness Lore, Listen, Hide & Move Silently.

1st level is, of course, as a ranger, to quadruple those 4 skill points. :D

dumb

I know DM's have total control of their worlds and all but this is dumb. Just dumb. Only my opinion of course.

If you really want the Barbarian's Rage ability, and your DM is allowing prestige classes, you might consider the Singh Rager from Oriental Adventures. They're a powerful class...in addition to the aforementioned Rage, you'll get Lion's Pounce (full attack at the end of a charge) and Swiftness of the Lioness (free non-magical haste up to 10 rounds a day).

Definitely ranger, at least a few levels. 4 skill points and Wilderness Lore isn't cross-class. If you don't want spells, get out before level 4.

Some Fighter levels will give you access to specialization and bonus Feats.

Pick up some Rogue levels to become a more dangerous in-fighter. Also a huge bucket of skills, so you can afford to cross-class to boost your Wilderness Lore.

Best thing to do is figure out what skillset you want, then backwards work the classes to get them.

Two methods.

1st go 4 levels as a Ranger (you'll actually have access to a spell if your wisdom is high enough, or more... nothing wrong with a couple of "Nature's Powers" is there?). Then Fighter. What's wrong with Two weapon fighting? Go and get the Shelid Expert feat from SaF (it allows you to sheild bash and keep your AC). Now carry an Axe and a Spiked sheild. If thats not Barbarian enuff, wear a Horned helmet and Bunny Fur briefs...

2nd option. Go Fighter all the way and take Cosmopolitan out of FRCG. It makes a cross-classed skill in class and gives a +2. Then take Wilderness lore.

Ranger/Fighter is great.

My current Ranger/Fighter went the Trip/Disarm-Knockdown Route and uses a Spiked Chain (oh, and he could use his light flail with his shield of bashing, but why bother?)...

But I had to make some sacrificies for the ability scores (Strength 14 isn`t very good...)

For a Barbarian like type, you probably should use the Ranger/Fighter idea. If you don`t want to concentrate on spells, stop Ranger at level 3 or 6. (4 is a bad idea, because your bad saves become worse ) )

To "simulate" a bit rage, Power Attack -> Cleave / Bull Rush might prove useful.
For weapons I think some "barbaric looking" weapons like Axes or Flails are good ideas...
