DM or GM?

Should the arbiter of D&D games be titled the DM or something else?

Heck, hardly anyone uses DM screens these days, instead preferring laptops or tablets or nothing at all, ...
Speak for yourself. :)

I don't know any DM who does not use a screen.

Oh, and it's DM, thank you very much.

I think that DM should be replaced by Synergy Facilitator. The game is not about the person running it, it's about the players. At most, the one running it needs to divorce his or her own ideas about the game and provide a neutral arbiter for those actions the players want to perform, hence Facilitator. Games with more than one player can become more than the sum input of each player, thus the Synergies that the Facilitator can help bring to life.

Which turns the DM from active participant to passive processing unit, a living breathing computer.

No thanks.

Why should the DM enjoy himself. Just have that challenge monkey keep you busy rolling dice all night. How about we change role-playing to cooperative storytelling and include everybody in on the fun. The games are better when you show the DM a bit of respect for the extra work that is required of them and not expect them to run the game you want. That is difficult with a group so everybody has to...wait for it...compromise to make sure that every player and DM gets elements in the game they enjoy. That is really a selfish thing to say and I hope you didn't mean that as it sounds.

I've been in too many giant corporation meetings lately... hence synergy and facilitation. It's probably amusing, in a horrifying way, to fellow cube farmers.
