The thing is that at 17 'cool' is more important than 'fair.' We sucked pretty bad when we were 17. I often tried to win as the DM and ended up putting the party in situations that were unfair because it was 'sweet.'

But wait- I have an awesome idea that I just know you'll love! Why dont you try to DM your own game!

....my DM was raving to us about how cool all his items were....and there was no way we could run.... He would hit us for about 5d6 every time he hit, and we were also damaged every time we hit him.....He also, in the middle of the battle mixed up an alchemy potion, and healed himself for 200 damage.....

Oh, and the guy had a magic item that halved all magical damage.
