DM thanks

By coming back :p

Sometimes it's the best reward just to see their faces asking "when do we play next time" before the currect session is even finished.

As a player I always thank my DMs by telling them I had a great time. I bring snacks or drinks I know they like.

My players thank me by telling me great game and thanks for running it, and by doing little things for me like the one player who is drawing my maps for my game world because I suck at it.

Baking goodies for the session and helping with website maintenance. (...Even though I accidentally killed part of it... I'm rebuilding! I swear!)

And for the DM who's poking me in the arm and asking, "Hey! What about THIS DM?" -- I thank him with some smooches, cooking for him and asking, "When do we play again?"

In the traditional fashion.

By questioning his every ruling, complaining the encounters are too hard, the treasure is too little, building the most broken character build possible, and avoiding his plot hooks like the plague.
Same thing happens in my group :P

I think it's a problem that many DMs suffer, but we know that somewhere the players are thankful. They usually thank me by easily bypassing encounters that I spent hours piecing together...

From my group I'd say that TarionzCousin would be the prohibitive favorite... and by favorite I mean, most likely to make you want to burn your eyes out with Acid for watching. ;)
We rotate DM's in our group, so we regularly "thank" each other by killing each other's players when we're the DM. This has been a long-standing tradition, starting with the next time I DM and Rabelais' character.
