DM to DM...Spellfire?

I once had a spellfire wielder in the party. We started at 5th level and he spend some of his starting wealth to buy cheap wands of light which he drained after a battle (Spelfire Chaneller), so he nearly had always a full charge on him.

After reducing the BBEG Wizard who were ment to be a reoccuring villian with an 18w6 blast to a pile of ashes at level 5 the DM wasn't very keen to allow another spellfire wielder anytime again.

I played a spellfire wielding dwarf wizard for a little while. we bought a bunch of cheap divine wands and I simply had the cleric point them at me while I absorbed them. At low levels it was really effective. We played through RttToEE and the dragon in moathouse was much less a challenge for instance. My advice is be careful, and perhaps limit the number of spellfire charges a character can blow at any given time...

Honestly, most DM's don't use a lot of magic against their players. It also only works on magic targeted directly at him... not a whole lot of good against Fireballs (if I remember the rules right... I may be mistaken). I have to agree with the other guy, if he is going to amp up by casting spells on himself let him. I personally think that Spellfire is a waste of time. Having to ready an action to absorb is what takes some of the functionality away. If he is playing a Warrior type and they face an enemy party with a spellcaster all the spellcaster has to do to keep the warrior spellfire weilder out of the fight is to act like he is going to cast a spell every round. Since the warrior most likely won't have spellcraft he won't be able to tell what the spell is. If the spellcaster casts a Summon Monster spell or anything that doesn't directly effect the warrior then the warrior will have wasted his action for that round. As soon as he does something besides readying an action let the enemy spellcaster let a spell fly directly targeted at the spellfire wielder. I wouldn't use this tactic while the party is low level but by the time they make 7th level or so they should have enough of a reputation that their foes should know what to expect when they face the party.
