DM Veneration

A problem? I hate to tell you, demiurge, but most DMs would give their eye-teeth to have players interested enough to write character-related fiction, or journal entries, or the like. Usually trying to get players more involved, to get them to be charater-creative outside of a gaming session is terribly difficult. And you think this is a problem? :)

Hmm. Weird fan-type things my players have done...

-Since I'm the only regular DM in our circle of friends, almost all of my games have had "waiting lists" as I limit players to five or six and end up turning people away.

-Some of my regular players have specific binders for my campaigns to keep everything having to do with former characters (though this is probably due to the fact that I keep switching games and claiming we'll pick them up again, when in fact we don't). I know a lot of players have character collections, but I'm still getting a warm, fuzzy feeling from this. :p A quick aside- whereas players tend to keep their old PCs in carefully organized binders, my old PCs (what few I have) tend to be scattered around my room, underneath stacks of books, etc. Is this a player/DM difference, or am I just a slob?

-A friend of mine has done tons of artwork (good, artwork too- check it out: http://www.geocities.com/whimsickle_art/ ). Four or five of the portraits are PCs from my last game. He had to do a showing recently to get his degree, so they were all hanging up in an actually gallery for a couple of weeks. People that I didn't know where coming up to me at the show and talking to me about stuff that had happened to the characters in the game- which, at the time, was kind of weird. I never actually got introduced to any of these people, mind you (artist friends are like that, so what can you do...). But for someone who can't draw a straight line, it was nice to catch some second-hand admiration.

That's the most recent stuff I can think of. There's also weird fan things that happen whenever we run LARPs at conventions, like people driving eight or more hours to play for the weekend. But really, that's a whole different ball game...

Back in 1990-91 I was going to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. We played the old FASA Star Trek RPG every weekend for almost a year with one of the best GMs Ihave ever met. This man was evil, diabolical, well prepared and ran the best game of any system I have ever played. Then he died.

Chuck was one of the most talented GMs I have ever met. Star Trek is not the easiest game to run becuase there are so many expectations and so much to build on, but he pulled it together very well. I have every character sheet he ever gave me, ship stat sheets, orders and writeups that he made, even scribbles from the games that we played when I was running damage control on our ship. In campaigns that I later ran, and in the campaign that runs to this day, there is a Galaxy-class USS Algeo named after him.

I miss my friend and we who knew him talk about him to this day. When you find a friend and GM like that, the bar gets raised pretty high, but I do try to follow his example every time I run a game of Star Trek or D&D or whatever.

Clearly not a problem - it sounds enjoyable.

I always enjoy positive feedback like this though I've not yet been lucky enough to have one of my players write fan fiction about the campaign. That's great.

Sounds like you've got no problems to me...at least not pertaining to the topic listed. Unless you come home to find a rabbit boiling on your stove -- things seem lovely ;).

In my case, our group indicates its faith and enjoyment in my DM'ing prowess a bit differently. Every attempt to let me play a PC/give someone else a shot as DM, results in me back at the controls several months later. Simply put, they miss me as DM...either that, or I'm a truly atrocious player :p!!

What I'm impressed at is when a player from an OLD game remembers me and the game better than I do. Player feedback is great too.
I know that with Wizardru most of us have been playing with him for over 15 years. I remember every character I ever played with him where I can't say that about any other DM. And come to think of it to come back week after week for so long as DM or player says a lot.

Hell no, it's not a problem. If they start leaving mice on your pillow or boiling your rabbit on the stove when you DM for another group, then it's a problem.

Sounds like the great DM in the sky is giving you a +2 circumstance bonus to your next "gitt'n some" roll.

No. just no. Sorry. Anyways, it's nice to see some responses. And I've got two, yes two, two Basic Instinct refrences in one post!

Demiurge out.
