DMG 2: yay or nay

The contents of Chapter 3 are worth the price tag alone. I'd suggest you buy it from Amazon.com, it is only $26.37.

Indeed.

Chapter 6 on companion spirits I liked for some reason. I personally think it's a really cool concept. I also liked the work done on organizations.

That was one of the few sections I truly disliked -- probably because of my image of the fantasy genre. The other big one was the NPC Traits section (the one with Vestigal Twin and the like).

Otherwise, it is an incredibly useful book. I've been gaming, near exclusively as GM, for over 20 years, and I still found the first few chapters of basic advice to be very useful. My other favorite bit was the material templates -- even though my anti-planehopping style makes the ones presented nearly useless, I think it's a great way to model things like mithril, adamantine, and racial "special" designs.

Check out Green Ronin's Advanced Gamemaster's Guide. Both it and the DMG2 have some good info but I think that DMG2 is, though useful for all DMs, a beginners book (no insult to the grognards like myself who might like it), but the Advanced Gamemaster's Guide is more a book of options for the experienced DM.

Check it out here: Advanced Gamemaster's Guide

The PDF version which is cheaper but IMO less convenient can be had here: Advanced Gamemaster's Guide PDF

And no, I don't work for Green Ronin and don't get any kick backs I just like the book. :D
