DMG to include a "starter town".

Town or city? Because if the latter, why not Greyhawk or Waterdeep?

Personally, I'm all for a starting town in the DMG. While many of us may only use it once, that's okay. Someone starts somewhere.

When I was a DM for the first time, I got lucky in finding Under Illefarn, which detailed the town of Daggerford. It was a wonderful supplement and gave me a ready-made town for the player characters to call home.

Plus, it's a shared experience. There could be a lot of community discussion on how the town was developed in various peoples' campaigns.

So your just going to hand wave away the points?

If you have seen nothing then I must conclude that you are looking with biased eyes.

You know what?

This is not the first time, while we've been debating a point on ENWorld, that you've accused me of being "biased" because I happen to not see the issue from your point of view. But to do so after accusing me of "handwaving" a valid point is the hight of hypocrisy, and I expect better of you.

I don't believe I'll be continuing this discussion any further, since at this point, it can only result in me saying something that would get me banned.

...And I want to revisit Remathilis' question: Can someone tell me where this "Threshold" town came from, what product it originally appeared in? I'm seriously blanking, because I don't remember an Iconic town named "Threshold."

Threshold was the home town in Basic DnD found within the Grand Duchy of Karameikos. I found it in the Red Box and the Expert sets. It was fleshed out a little in my favourite module B10 Nights Dark Terror.

OK, so put some words in my mouth and declare the debate over. That works.

Sorry for the derail

The idea of firing the customer base has some legitimacy. Erik Mona talks about a discussion at WOTC in 1999 where some folk thought it was a good idea. We discussed it here:

http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=208750

But you do realize that Eric Mona then goes on to say, that they decided attempting to "fire their fanbase" was a bad idea?

So something they discussed between 2e and 3e but never actually have tried lends credence to the idea?

Is that seriously what you're saying? Because I draw the opposite conclusion from it.

The important thing is not that the town is included, but how it's introduced. Do they make it clear that the town is not meant to be used, but rather that the DM is supposed to learn from the example and design their own town? That's not handholding; it's teaching and inspiring creativity which is exactly what the DMG is supposed to do.

If the introduction is more like 'feel free to use this town in your campaign' there will be an awful lot of Hommlet's popping up in green-DM campaigns.

Hommlet stands out in my mind and memory as THE "starting town" above and beyond anything else. It's The Iconic Hometown. Which is funny because despite starting with the red boxed Basic D&D in the early 80's, I've never played a game that used Hommlet. It just kind of osmosically sunk into my brain. Let it be Hommlet. :)

(Edit: Although Threshold would be pretty cool too, if you could somehow seperate it from it's original context in some way)

If you can really convince me that I'm "putting words in your mouth"--without insulting us both by trying to claim that saying I have "biased eyes" is anything other than saying I'm biased--I'll be happy to apologize and continue.
