DM's head explodes, film at 11

The fact that most of my players are worse at running a single PC at 100% effectiveness than I am at running six NPCs also helps :)
Yep, I generally out-think them as well. 'course, I'm a tactics geek.

Have someone else play important NPCs. It works wonders for player fear levels.

Truth, there. When I moved to a town where an old college buddy had a game running, but no open spots for a player, he let me run the bad guy periodically. He's normally a bit of a rat bastard, but I think I kinda worried him.

I think the funnest was to have the BBEG Polymorph Other (2E) his trolls into bulettes when the PCs started putting up hard defenses. Bulette breaks down defenses, does some damage, and gets "killed", reverts to troll, and regenerates while troll-bullette #2 pushed the party back.

yup... the but and the comma belong to the successful save.

which means no exceptions to the failed save.... therefore you can do 150hp of damage with harm to guys who roll a 1.

hey hong my mang,

did any of the BBEG's items go poofff also? i mean you did roll a 1. ;)

Fond memories..... A friend was running a 2E DL game and had a high level Solamnic knight, Sir Ali Khatorva. He was a supposed to be a real prig, embodying the best and worst of the breed all at once. I was watching and the DM asked me to play the NPC to take some of the load off.

The DM'd given him some nifty magic items and never really looked at the character again.
I looked at the sheet and quickly reconfigured the gear he was wearing vs carrying and lowered his ac into the low negative numbers, boosted his attack & damage, and handed off some handy but redundant defensive items to the NPC squire Timmy, giving him the second best AC in the party. (!!!) Sir Ali was quickly dubbed "SaraLee - the cheesecake Paladin."

I managed to courteously insult just about every PC, made every save against the traps the rogue intentionally missed in an attempt to kill off Sir Ali, and successfully pinned Lord Soth for two rounds. Oh sure, he was blinded and thrown through a portal mirror that might have just left him in the abyss but it was all worth it when Timmy bravely charged forward with Ali's spare sword and (thanks to an insane AC) managed to occupy Soth long enough for the PCs to destroy the McGuffin of Badness.

I believe Sir Ali was left wherever the portal took him since the PCs decided to kill him on sight. Timmy (knighted shortly thereafter) sung Sir Ali's praises loudly at every opportunity, pointing out the deficiencies of the rogue and the fact that only the Solamnic Knights (and Squires) had the strength of will to face Soth directly. Good times, good times....

Mathezar: "...And it exploded."
Nesmith: (on Vox) "Did I just hear you say it EXPLODED?"
Madison: "Hold please..."

Hong: "HAHA! You don't know this, but he's readying to countersp--"

[HONG'S HEAD EXPLODES]

After numerous such incidents amongst our game group, on both sides of the screen, we've taken to reflecting on the humorous, partially fearful respect we pay to the Gods of Dice and Irony (or GDI).

Fickle are the GDI, and we laugh about saying certain things out loud, such as declarations of imminent victory or success. The GDI are listening.

Once I was watching a friend roll a reflex save to avoid being blinded by my cleric's shield of blinding. He's a rogue (fighter, really, but got a few rogue levels, and his dex is solid). He expressed his concern that he wouldn't succeed.

I said, "Don't worry. You only need a three."

He rolled a two. Not a one, but still.

He turned to me and said, "Why would you ever say that out loud?" (The GDI are sometimes fond of affecting rolls you aren't making but comment upon.)

Oh yes, the GDI sure listen. Countless time this arrived. "I've good chances to succeed, I need to roll 7 or above." If you say this, you'll roll either a 1 or a 6. It works in every dramatic situation. (The GDI are not easily fooled, when you say that just to test, it'll probably won't work.)
