DM's head explodes, film at 11

My players and I discussed this for a few moments. We ended up deciding that the only way he could have missed is if one of the other characters attacking the cube accidentally got in the line of fire at that last instant. Roll damage on player 2.
Simple - he mis-loaded the crossbow, and the bolt went into the ceiling. He mis-loaded the crossbow and the bolt stayed there when the string went. He dropped the crossbow. He tripped over while he fired.

Big build up to final battle with the wizard villain. The PCs fight their way through dozens and dozens of minions, near to single digit hp. I have no idea how they are going to fight him.

The Cleric drinks a potion of invisibility and uses it to move witht he PCs healing them during battle, dragging the wounded back out of harms way, etc.

Finally the cleric leaves the PCs (in a large linen closet) to scout as he is the only one with any hp or spells and they need to find the villain- whom they have never seen.

The wizard hears the cleric (Half Plate and no ranks in Move Silent), he is trying though. The wizard casts See Invisibility and the Cleric casts Harm (this was 3e and I had informed the Players early on that there would be a save- they agreed there should be and so there is).

Missed save. Cleric kills wizard with his mace and moves on.

“What are you looking for?” I asked the Player.

He informs me that he’s looking for the villain. I shrugged and they rest out the night in the linen closet of the villain’s castle.

The next weekend the PCs sack the castle, they kill the last of the minions and are disappointed to find that the villain is no where to be found (he’s dead on the floor of a guest room in the castle- they looted his body already and got lots of cool stuff from him).

So they start hunting for him. Two weeks of them doing nothing but hunting this villain and I proclaim that- “Harm no longer functions in my campaign. Period.”

Lots of disappointed Players asking why- I answer them not at all.

I have not told them until this moment. Two years they have searched for him, off and on, through another half dozen levels. They know he is up to something, but he's just hiding to well- dam him!

Were you playing 3.0?

'cause consistent with the mechanics of its prerequisite spell, heal, it's now a Will save in 3.5. :)

(Obviously, assuming you're playing with the default 1 = auto-miss on attacks and saves rule, it didn't really matter in this case what kind of save it was. But still.)
Yes, 3.0. Fort save and one smite per day. And we were using that default rule. Heck, I didn't know there was any other way to do it.

So, they didn't know what the villain looked like? Hehehe, I like the paranoia this induced.

To be honest I was a little upset by the fact that none of them knew they had killed the big bad, I wanted to have a big drawn out battle, but as it turned out it was more like two hits and dead.

I have gotten a couple of emails and a phone call regarding this post and everyone is fairly upset that there was not a big fight, because few of them remember the guy or the fight. :(

Bring him back, undead and badder than ever. Not to forget radioactive.

I thought Harm couldn't drop anything below 1, regardless of the save. That's the only reason good clerics could cast it IMC.

Once, our party was fighting a half-dragon storm giant, who was one of the BBEGs at the time. We teleported him out into a field where the rest of the party was ready, and then we all attacked. The paladin managed to do 50+ damage and it rolled a 1 on its saving throw in the second round.
