DM's: Player's Campaign Book Design Challenge (incl. House Rules)

I don't often print out a full campaign handout, except for maps and "cheat sheets" for oddball rules... In my new Iron Heroes game, for example, everybody gets a copy of an Iron Heroes Primer, listing the major rules differences between it and D&D.

Aside from that, I've gotten into the habit of keeping a Wikipage for my campaigns... That way, I can update it with new information as we go along.

My wife, on the other hand, is excellent at creating campaign handouts. If I get I chance, I'll dig up the file for her new Red Hand of Doom game, and upload it.

When I get home I will set up the file for download. The file size limits for ENWorld are too small, so I am just going to set it up for folks to download from my own site.

*EDIT* Okay, I lied. I found a place that would host the file, so I set it up before leaving the office. The file, all 7meg of it, can be found at http://www.savefile.com/files/214105
I know some folks will find it contains unnecessary or redundant material, but my players like it.

One bit of advice: usage of color means that you're having your players eating up their printer cartridges. Although it makes for a more beautiful product, I don't put that burden on my players.

Just do color on the cover. I print the covers myself, and 1 copy of the handbook, then take it to Kinkos and copy the handbook. Doesn't add up to very much. I also have a comb binder, and bind them.

Now there's a book! It's definately very comprehensive regarding standard character creation. I take it most of your players dont' own the players handbook?

I absolutely love your alignment standards.

Ah, found it... My wife really likes coming up with campaign handouts. Here's the one she came up with for her new Red Hand of Doom game (watch out, there may be a spoiler or two). It's 40 pages long and includes an index.

For her, the Campaign is a way to ensure that everyone at least knows what their options are, even if they don't own all the splat books... Hence the long feats lists and such.

She had printed, and comb bound it with cardstock covers.

Wow, that's a great summary of IH. Did you write that? I'll definitely be stealing it for future IH games. :D

Agreed. We've been using Action Points, but there's no 'descriptor to that (i.e. the Iron Heroes-type skill check for a bonus). I'm going to try to adapt some of it to our game. For example, action points for certain actions will be a gimme (e.g stabilize), but if they want the combat bonus, they'll have to describe why they would use a skill check (e.g. saying that they want to jump into combat for the +2 bonus). The action points would give them a number of times per level that they can do it..as opposed to everybody making multiple rolls every combat...

That will encourage people to make combats more interesting.
