DM's Suport Group: Most Cliche Player Behaviors Ever

I get frustrated at times when people agree to play a certain style game and then without telling to the DM or the rest of the players try and change it.

I was running a heroic game. I told the players ahead of time that I wanted heroic style characters. I said give me a reason why Bahmuet would pick you to be the vanguard in his fight against evil.

Everybody was okay with this and said they wanted to play it. I got a lawful good paladin, lawful good monk, neutral good ranger and a chaotic neutral beguiler.

I said no to the alignment and sat down and had a talk with the player what I wanted to see. He said he understood but come game days his character was always trying to do backstabbing things to the party. He delighted in putting the paladin in unpleasant situations. He would kill prisoners behind the party's back.

I tried talking to the player outside of the game. That didn't work we couldn't just kick him out because his wife played in the game and we played at their house.

Finally I just gave him enough robe and let him hang himself and his character was executed by the authorities. And after an execution in the world the body is completely destroyed so that it is very hard to bring them back. That is if you could find a cleric willing to break the law and face summary execution themselves for raising a a lawfully executed prisoner.

He sulked got mad quit the game for several weeks then came back and brought in a neutral wizard. He was not heroic but he was not as evil and disruptive as the beguiler.

I blame FIREFLY for this most recent pet peeve but it's the sudden appearance of corn-pone Mal Reynolds anti-heroes in a lot of games I've been in or run.

Even more grating to my main bearings is when being a "big damn hero" is entirely inappropriate for the setting. Hey, Nathan Fillion, guess what - you and your brown coat just got shot from 300m away by a Polish bandit and left to die in the radioactive mud outside Kalisz - I SAID WE WERE PLAYING TWILIGHT 2000 YOU NINCOMPOOP.

It would annoy me too (though not as much as your font of choice), partially because Mal isn't an anti-hero. He's a plain out-and-out good guy. (Yes, he would claim otherwise. He's a hero and a liar.)

The player who only plays a single character concept and never plays anything else. Including keeping the exact same ability scores. To this end they also argue why all other classes should be changed so that their favorite concept has the best advantages.

The player who only sits in front of Elminster's house and never does anything else to go adventuring. No matter what the DM does to encourage it.

The player who models his character after a popular character in comics or other media, and plays absolutely nothing else.

There are other things to try.

Amen, brother. Amen.

Now, prepare to be flamed by all the Firefly hardcores.

PS - I tried to XP you for that post, but I must spread some 'round first. If there is someone else out there sick of hearing about how good firefly is from everyone you know, feel free to step up on my behalf and XP Mr. Delver here.

Yeah, I have to agree vocally with this too. Double-post be damned.

Let's see:

  • One of my group always plays the beefy fighter. Always. It sucks because nobody else gets to and he isn't even good at it.
  • I used to play with Dodger the Thief. All his characters were I-D-E-N-T-I-C-A-L. Except for the Tasslehoff clone.
  • Another guy I used to game with always played a "dwarf ninja" concept. Sometimes a dark elf, but usually dwarf.
  • Another was always a Lawful Annoying Cleric of some Lawful Annoying god. I don't think he was happy unless he was pushing his beliefs on the other party members, or stopping them from having fun.
  • Another fella in the group would, if left to his own devices, probably always play a Charisma Paladin (played mostly like a cleric) or pacifist Cleric tweaked for max healing. Fortunately, he likes to "play to suit" whatever the rest of the group is doing, and has branched out a bit. This might be less annoying if I didn't dislike Divine characters so much.
I'm sure that I've forgotten a few...

For all I know, maybe I do this too. I don't think I do, but it's hard to self-judge sometimes.

I'd consider it, but I just cannot xp that font.
