DnD 3.5 Prophet's Blood

Feel free to let me know if this doesn't jive with background.

Name: Kardus of (insert town name)

Kardus is 18 years old having lived in the small village for all of his life. Local legend says his family line was started by a (relatively powerful) druid (Horse Animal lord) (least 6 generations back). His family has continued to be known for their horse herd, and they manage cows and sheep (some of these belong to other families in the village, but kardus's family cares for them in exchange for crops and other services) (the land they have is more suited for grazing than farming unlike most of the village, I assume because Kardus's family is one of the newcomers to the village ).

His family has continued to have a history of druids and rangers, his great-great uncle was a ranger, a distant aunt was a priestess of (insert nature diety) and most importantly his grandfather is a druid (i'm thinking fourth level give or take). His grandfather did some adventuring in his days but retired to take care of the farm when the great-great uncle died. He started his family rather late, and is probably in his 70s now. He works mostly on his woodcarving now (aided by woodshape) but aids with anyone/anything hurt and has been teaching Kardus.

Kardus is five foot six inches, with shoulder length dark brown hair which is usually pulled back with a clasp. He is right at home with almost any animal, expecially domestic farm animals, but would be uneasy around people, especially strangers. Kardus is especially attached to his horse (animal companion) a dappled grey with a fairly bright white spot on her chest, thus her name Bright Heart (i may make up something fancier and say thats the druidic equivalent :) ).

***I'd like to have a puppy also when I level will be a dog animal companion??, in meantime be a non-fighter, but slightly trained puppy. Heel, sit, stay, hide*****

As he officially is preparing to go questing, his grandfather has gifted him with a ring, a necklace, and a staff (quarterstaff). According to his grandfather they have been in his family since they first settled here, he also said they may reveal magical powers in times of need. (What he won't say is the reason half his party escaped, was that the items activated, suffice it to say flamestrikes galore, and the ring teleported the surviving members away. However, there are other stories which describe the items with far different abilities. Thus, the items could be weakened, drained permanently, or something else.)

**DM: These can just be heirlooms, can be conducive to enchantment (easier to enchant), or can be magical items. We can discuss options or you can decide. I thought it'd be sweet if the ring was a ring of animal friendship. I have other ideas and perhaps e-mail would be best to discuss.

***Further DM Note: I hope this fits into the background ok. Feel free to tell me if something cannot fit, I won't be that upset :). I don't know about feelings for other races is the village all humans? What would a typical villagers attitude be towards non-humans.

*Flaw: I know I've seen this somewhere but tell me what you think: Wild Affinity: Make Will save to attack animals/hurt nature otherwise take -4 to attack, Will save is DC 10+ animals level. NOTE: This does not apply to magical or otherwise unnatural beasts like owlbears, etc.

*I might know Catrin fairly well, I imagine a tomboy would take advantage of slightly wilder setting, going out for herbs, visiting and riding the horses etc. I assume I know other people connected to the village. I think the painter could be friends with my grandfather both being artists and having lost people they cared for. Just a thought, subject to Daffyd and DM.

Solos - yeah, sounds like Catrin and Kardus could know each other quite well! Especially since they have fairly similar backgrounds, religious family ties and possibly closer to grandparents than parents, and are of a similar age. I can definitely imagine Catrin spending a lot of time with Kardus and his grandfather as a younger girl - she's an animal lover too and doesn't have any horses of her own. :) Are Kardus's parents alive, by the way?

I'm thinking they are alive.

Kardus is closer to his grandfather, shared interests and all. I picture Kardus being the second son with about 6 years older brother who spends more of the time with dad than Kardus.

His mother is still around, she's from a nearer larger town, very social person. She spends most of every day going around visiting. Very kind-hearted stereotypical mom, checks to see if everyone's (mostly children) dressed warmly, etc. Volunteers with the local church teaching children to read and write.

Here is my pitch to the community after looking over the house rules.

History
Dalen is a craftsman. He has been through hard times as well as good times. Famine and feasts. He is a Fletcher serving the Valley as he can. He has been able to manifest a mindblade since he was young, but was never inclined to use it as a weapon. Though he has entertained many thoughts throughout the years about going on adventures or joining the local militia on a brigand hunt, but it always seemed like there was something getting in the way.

This past summer his wife passed away. They had lived together for 22 wonderful years and have sent their two children into the world. They returned to the town to see their mother off. They are good kids, but as a craftsman Dalen was never much in their lives, and now that his wife is gone he has to find strained excuses to visit for short times. It is only short times as everyone tends to get into each others way and Dalen in his wisdom at least knows when to leave before starting something that he might regret. Now he lives alone with his Mule Bella, but he dreams of much more as he continues to craft arrows for his community, especially as times grow hard again and outside influences are threatening the community.

Description
Dalen is an unremarkable man who just turned 40. He is well known in his community and participates in local festivals and offers what he can to those in need even though it is not much. He is a man who would rather think things through than rush in, but understands that there are times that action must take precedence over prudence.

Dalen has long curly brown hair that would be better described as a mop of hair than anything else. He has an easy smile and a fatherly manner. His eyes are such a dark brown as to be nearly black. His frame is slight but solid, as a craftsmans’ should be, and his hands are worn and callused from years of crafting arrows.

Some history for the campaign world. More to come as I PCify it.

It is the 200th year of the Age of Glorious Advancement.

Beginning when several bands of heroic men and women fought alongside gods to destroy a cult that called the second moon Eclipse from it's slumber. Among these heroes was Hikaru the Light Bringer, a cleric ascending after Soltus of the Bright Sky, fell to Eclipse. Since this time the world has begun to recover.

Hikaru's only daughter Tomo, raised by a foolish sorcerer, was quickly appointed Queen of a devastated world. Her reign was long, and fraught with difficulties as she went to task at rebuilding the world. Under her leadership she gathered the fragments of society to rebuild a land united by divine might.

Tomo was soon gifted a ship called the Goddess' Light by a group of especially devout worshipers. With this vessel she was quick to make relations with other continents, assuring trade for the Great Kingdom. Tragically she died after one such trip to a previously unknown land to the south. Leaving behind a husband and princess the Great Kingdom has continued to this day, with a maternal lineage straight back to the goddess Hikaru.

Currently ruled by the Queen Naoko, and her husband King Shingo, times have become tense between the Great Kingdom and several other nations. Claims of theocratic bullying and unjust trade practices by other nations have begun to worry away at the diplomatic ties between countries.

Do you have a solt for one more? Because I'm thinking of doing a kobold bard or sorcerer

*edit And would you mind if my character knows your paper bard? Cause I've a really good background for mine if you don't

randomling: I'm working on PC safe setting material. Mia Culpa.

SolosAddie: I'll accept the flaw, but, with this change: DC is 25 - CR of animal. Makes more sense to be less inclined to hurt small harmless animals than big scarey animals.

Ivellious: Submit a character, and I'll let you in if I like it. You'll have to ask Paper_Bard about the later.

No worries, I know from experience what hard work it is to do that stuff! I'm just mightily curious, especially since what I've read of the setting is so intriguing... More importantly though, does the sketchy background I've written for Catrin fit in with your thoughts? :)

Everybody's characters sound cool - we are going to make an interesting group, aren't we? Looking forward to playing with you all!

ETA: One of my favourite TV shows at the moment stars an actress called Naoko Mori, so I'm quite happy to worship Queen Naoko. ;)
