as a furhter note that you need to make a BONUS is never negative in 3e. Only penalties are EVER neagtive. Same thing applies with penalties they are never positive.
Bonus and penalty are defined terms in D&D3e and thus if you were to receive a +2 deflection bonus and a -2 deflection penalty they would stack because only BONUSes of the same type don't stack.
