Yes. They give a nice cross section of those willing to click on a poll. Plus if the poll is public, one can see where many folks stand when they were too busy to post .

Sure! For instance, they attract admins who recall that we have a longstanding prohibition about "joke" or non-utilitarian polls. Since you're trying to make a meta-point and I find the subject kind of interesting, I'll slide this into Off Topic. [Technically it goes in Meta, but clearly I'm feeling my oats.]
