Do we really need Monkeys?

Indeed. There are plenty of other critters in the MM that don't fit in with a Tolkien-esque world. I don't recall the point where the Fellowship met centuars and fought a manticore, for example.

D&D is a hotch-potch of all manner of things. With just the core rules and some careful trimming you could go Classic Greek, Tropical Jungle, Middle Earth, Nehwon and a host of others.

That's kind of the point, really.... :)

This sounds as cut-and-pasted as the original post. :)

If you get rid of monkeys, you are playing D&D WRONG. Plain and simple. I suggest you correct the error of you ways, lest the gaming police be forced to conduct a raid of your home and fix the problem for you. You have been warned.

Don't you dare touch the monkey! I think monkeys are underpowered as they are written; I hope that the 4E monster manual (due in October, right after the 4E PHB and DMG) features a wider selection of miscellaneous primates for use in our games. I've already heard a rumor from a trustworthy source at WotC that common monkeys will get the option to take a ranged touch poop attack as a feat.

;)

But wouldn't that kill the Monkey Grip feat? Please?

Or perhaps we'd have to suggest the ape grip in its place, but wait we already have that...

If we got rid of them, would the monkeys have to go home, back from where they came from?

If there were no monkeys, then I could not have inflicted Fiendish Monkeys with flaming acidic poo attacks on the last group.

Perhaps it would be for the best. They've never let me forget that.

I'm glad they're finally going to make that rule official. That's gotta be the most common house rule I encounter...
