D&D (2024) Do you actually like weapon masteries?

I think that the pure damage bump option should always be the weakest option so it is the least desirable in CharOp. Let the tech options be better choices. If the pure damage option was better, more people would just choose it over other options.

I'm a recovering CharOpper. These days I want to play specific concepts. I would love a 1d10 Warpick dual-wielder who uses them to climb colossal monsters. If they were 1d12 one-handed, I would be turned off. It's just too much.

People did the same thing with the Champion subclass. It was determined to do less damage than a Battlemaster who never got a single short rest. Champion remains the more played choice.

People will argue, champion players will still take Flex even if the charop peeps determine it to be trash.
Cheating people out of effectiveness is not okay just because they're not looking for it.

If Versatile was 1d12, then there would be no reason to use a 2-handed Greatsword or Greataxe. Just 2-hand the Versatile weapon for the same damage.
The greatsword or greataxe would also get a weapon mastery along with the damage. Flex is a weapon mastery, so if a versatile weapon was used two handed, the user would have to choose between flex and whatever else was the option, so why not?

2d6 > 1d12. So the greatsword would be used because if you're not expecting to flex then why not?

And yes the greataxe is a problem child because people don't like it when compared to the higher damage maul and greatsword other than in highly specific builds. That the greataxe has Cleave is better than it was.
