Do you admit to being a gamer?

I'll admit to being a gamer, although I don't go announcing it with a trumpet and fireworks whenever I meet new people either. But I certainly don't put it on resume's. It's not at all relevant to what I do for a living, for one thing.

What do you mean admit? I'm not a gamer... I don't know what you're talking about.

Actually, I visited my one of my bosses offices the other day, and noticed a tremendous amount of celtic designed items around...

"Hmmm...", I thought to myself.

One wall had a picture of a dragon playing golf.

"Interesting...", I thought.

Then, his phone started ringing the Lord of the Rings theme.

I had to say something. I turned to him and said, "I like to play a game called Gamer/Not Gamer. You... are a gamer." Turns out he's been getting Dragon magazine since issue 8.

I sure do miss Gamer/Not Gamer at Nutkinland... (sigh)...

Never even thought about putting gaming or any other hobby on a resume. There wouldn't be room even if I wanted to. I've been consistently employed since I was 17.

Still, it is not a secret I'm a gamer. Anyone who pays attention to my reading material at lunch could figure that out. Nor is it a secret that I collect comics. I've even used comics as part of the reading curriculum in order to teach characterization and plot.

I am fairly certain that I did list gaming and comic book collecting as hobbies on my application for admission to the University of St. Thomas here in Houston.

which is worse (more geeky)
being a physicist (a theorist at that) or a gamer?

It doesn't matter which is geekier. Those of us in this position can't win. Anyone you run into will think one of those things makes you a high-end, unmitigated geek. Just buy the horned rimmed glasses and the pocket protector and give up. :D

I spit my drink out when I read this, haha, star fleet....:)

Of course, I don't go around wearing Star Fleet uniforms to work, or interrupting conversations about Survivor with "Yeah, my 30th level tiefling Paladin/Monk would have made that challenge. I remember when he...." either.

Although I never put it on a resume, being that it has nothing to do with what I do, I never deny being a gamer if someone asks.

I work as a welder for a BIG American motorcycle company (hint, hint). So I work with biker types every day. You'd be surprised how many play. I found at least two guys who play in my department and they know others who play. I heard the one guy talking about DnD the movie one night and just jumped right in the conversation.

If you keep quiet about your hobby, you lose out on potential gamers to play with.

My case is probably fairly rare but I have listed gaming on my resume in the past but it was totally appropriate as I was applying for a job in the PC Games industry.

Got the job to.
