Do you admit to being a gamer?

I'm out of the closet with my good friends, many of which are/were gamers.

My family knows I used to game, but they don't know I started playing again in 2001.

And I'm totally in the closet about it at work. We bust each others b:)lls constantly, and I refuse to give them ammo.

Hi, my name is Cold Beer and I'm a gamer...

Everyone knows I play D&D, and that Saturdays are my "Game" night. No big deal for me. =)

In fact, recently in the encounter that led up to getting my current girlfiriend, I blabed to her that I played D&D and was a gamer. I thought I blew it.

She looked at me with a quizical look and said, "What?" I then explained what that ment. She's not a gamer, but she's fine with it, and that's great. Most people I mention it too don't have a problem with it.

I get to put it on my resume because being able to run role-plays is a plus. (therapy)

Even in my normal life, depending on my mood, I'll tell new people I play D&D. If they are so judgemental and close-minded as to have a problem with it, they save me time and trouble in finding out they aren't the kind of friend i want anyway.

I wouldn't do it in a work environment until you find out what the bosses opinions are. They don't have to tell you the real reason your getting bad evals and are in danger of getting fired is that they hate gamers, or at least D&D.

It's not exactly the first thing out of my mouth, but I don't usually hide it.

A couple of months ago, someone asked me in an interview what I knew about .Net. I said, "I'm currently writing a utility in it for Dungeons and Dragons. It uses OOP and XML [blah, blah]."

Otherwise, it doesn't go on my resume, because it doesn't have anything to do with my trade (computer programming). I also don't list other hobbies/interests, like the fact that I sat on my political party's (no, I'm not telling which, for Eric/Morrus' sake) county level Platform Committee in 2000 and the county level Central Committee in 2000-2002.

Not embarrassed (pretty proud, actually, since my degree is PoliSci). It just doesn't have any bearing on my ability as a programmer or any other aspect of most places of employment.

I freely admit to gaming. Never put it on a resume, though I think I mentioned the teeny bit of writing I did, which happened to be for GURPS. Gaming also came up in an interview, which turned out to my benefit -- two or three of the interviewers gamed (or used to). That job, I got.

Too bad I got laid off before the company 3e game got started. :-/

Nope. I Never bring up gaming around non-gamers.

At one time not too long ago, I was working a 2nd job as a bouncer in a bar. A few of my friends worked there as well, both gamers. One is like me, ("dont ask-dont tell") the other guy.... well... lets just say he has a low Wisdom score.

Anyways, Mr. Wisdom walks up to me and my other friend while we are at work, chatting with SEVERAL co-workers and friends and says really loud "SO, ARE WE STILL PLAYING DUNGEONS & DRAGONS TOMORROW?" I wanted to punch him in the face. Hard.

Heck yea! Here's the bit from my resume, in fact. :)

I don't mind telling folks I game at all. :D I also have a blurb on there about being a charter and founding member of The Council of Tolkien and Literature at my HS! ;) Yup - that's right, me and my pals started a lit club in HS (despite the attempts of the administration to stop us) that is stil going on today! :D

During the interview for my current job (that I have been at nearly 7 years), I was asked about this - it led into a lengthy discussion about Tolkien and his work (I later found out that the fellow that asked me about was a big fan of JRR's work.... ;)

Also, when I worked in the office, we used to play at lunchtime- so much so that my boss, and three of my co-workers all have playtest credits on Oathbound: Domains of the Forge! :)

I see no reason for hiding the fact that I game anymore than the fact that I drive a minivan and love to hike, read, and work in my garden - it is a part of WHO I AM....

:D

Do I admit I'm a gamer? Heck yeah! I don't put it on any official documents no as it's not relevant to what I'm doing in my professional life. But, the people (extreme traditionalist where being open-minded is a sure sign of strangeness) around where I live already think I'm really weird, so it's just icing on the cake! :D I enjoy being different tho, so there you go.

I am open about gaming to my friends and family, but it has never really come up professionally. I think that it can help on a resume for some jobs, particularly for writers.

Professionally, I really haven't done very much. My first real job is happening right now, at the best sandwich shop around--Jimmy John's!

Anyhow, I'm not at all ashamed to be a gamer. I don't shout it form the rooftops, but if it comes up in conversation, I'll gladly talk about it. I just really don't care what people think anymore. It's a good place to be.

If "hobbbies" were hip and happening to be on resumes, I'd sure put it down... but everything i've heard here and just in general...I wouldn't put it on a resume.

If I got asked about it during the interview though... :)
