D&D 5E Do You Conduct AAR's After Each Session?

Howdy-

Do you guys conduct AAR's after each of your sessions? I do with my groups just to get a feel of how they conducted themselves during the session and how me the DM conducted myself during the session. Usually I will do a round robin type of AAR, each person notes what he/ she enjoyed and what he or she did not enjoy. Basically you as the DM are asking for the positives and the negatives of that session. Both players and the DM can than offer what is good and what can be further worked on in future games.

To me, an AAR is a great way to get good feed back on your game.

Yes, we also have ORPs and both sandbox and walk through rehearsals.

All of this is based on the timeline and backwards planning of course. ;)

I will sometimes ask how a particular thing worked if that thing is somewhat new in terms of design or implementation. Otherwise, I have a general policy that the door is open for comments and concerns and my players are pretty courageous when it comes to voicing their opinions. I don't get a lot of feedback though. I think that means I'm doing okay. I'm probably a much greater critic of my own abilities than they are in any case.

Not every session, but infrequently, yes.

I aim for one when the players are obviously floundering, their tactics appear seriously sub-optimal, or I begin to believe they've forgotten something they considered pivotal. I use the tool to make certain I and the players are playing the same game with the same expectations.

No, not particularly. Not because I don't need/want the feedback, but rather because I get that feedback throughout the session. So no need for some formal process later.

Yes, I do tend to talk like a pirate after a session.

Looking through the responses and seeing that AAR stands for after action report, I don't think I have ever asked for one but we do tend to talk about the session afterwards, might have a bit of what worked and what didn't but mostly I think we talk about what awesome things people did. Could be a great idea or just a simple well placed spell that turned a difficult encounter into an easy one.
