Do you ever cut and run?

Yes, i do agree. I'm currently working on a custom system that is much more realistic. Basically, you screw up in combat a few times, your dead. End of story. Brings an element of fear and uncertainty to them. Wont explain it all, but I've tested my system out a few times and omg combat moves so fast and its so much more realistic. Its insane.

What D&D lacks is an in-game motivation to make fleeing an option.

Very true. You'll flee the encounter, only to have to come back later and do it again. And that's if you managed to get away in the first place. And you'll probably be able to eke out a win if you stick around. So it's much less bother to try for it.

I really, really wish there were more reasons to flee in D&D.

Siege of Firebase Gloria (atheists in a combat situation)
Excuse me, but I happen to find that extremely offensive. It's the kind of fallacy religious people use that sounds funny, but which is not only completely untrue also asssumes things about atheists which highlights how little the religious understand what atheism is.

Having been in the army face-to-face with that cr*p I also find it personal.

Besides, I thought religious debate was off limits here.

That video has nothing to do with this topic.

If you want to debate it, Dawkins has a whole forum dedicated to men and women in armed services who are not religious right here:

You ever see the film? (FWIW, recommended to me by an atheist marine...)

That is part of a longer speech about what happens when under fire, and that subsection is about what some might perceive as "cowardice", about what is normal for someone to do under such extreme stress.

And running from battle is one such action.

Besides... It's funny.

But, like I said, they only posted the part people quote.

Sorry it offended.

Running, sure. Praying, no.

That's the part that makes it not funny.

Edit: I don't.. hate you for posting it. I kinda get it. But when you get that from your own company commander it very quickly becomes very unfunny.. it gets under your skin..

Praying, yes, depending on the person- such as the aforementioned marine.

He had that kind of reaction his first time in combat...but ONLY the first time. He found the words of the prayer he uttered to be, for him, just words.

Which is one of the reasons he liked this scene so much.

Now I'm regretting I said anything at all. I should know well enough to leave personal traumas elsewhere.

And we're in a thread about running away. I rolled bad on my judgement call. :1:

Meh- such is the nature of the Internet: with the absence of facial expression or body language, all you have to go on is the words on the screen.

Everyone does it: last year, due to sloppy editing, I insulted all of Islam.
