Do you exclusively play a single race?

Personally, I love the Githzerai. I've liked them since second edition, with the Planescape Handbook. The picture in the 3e psi handbook has 'bad-mofo' written all over it. I love playing the wandering mystic, and they're perfect for it.

As for gnomes, IMC I did a simple fix to them. I changed their stat mods from -2 STR, +2 CON to -2 STR, +2 INT, +2 CHA, and changed their favored class to sorcerer. Their popularity went WAY up after that.

I play humans as a default. I usually try to concentrate on only a couple of key things in any character (and roleplay those out), and, unless race is one of them, I stick to human.
