D&D 5E Do you get hex or hunters mark damage when you throw a net on someone?

I always thought nets should be a tool and not a weapon, so I would say no in general. You need damage to add the Hunter's Mark damage to.

But if it were a magical flaming net, then it would apply.

Note: this is how I would rule, not necessarily how I would adjudicate RAW.

Hex on the other hand does its own necrotic damage when it hits the target.
It defines the damage it deals as necrotic type, yes, but it also specifies that it’s “extra damage,” which to implies it’s still increasing the damage of the triggering attack.

Yeah, it’s really weird that a net is a weapon when it doesn’t act like one. Should have been equipment.

My thoughts exactly. Making it a weapon allows to say easily that it requires an attack roll to work and also who gets to use a proficiency bonus with it, but it has enough oddities that it would be better as equipment together with oil flasks and alchemist fire.

I would be inclined to disallow Hunter's Mark and Hex damage with a net. I would go maybe a bit with a narrative that HM allows you to hit where it hurts more but you need a weapon that hurts in the first place, while Hex is a curse that makes you bleed more but again you need to suffer some damage in the first place. For the same reason, I wouldn't allow Hex with grappling, shoving or disarming.
