I GM most of the time. I keep my campaign notes, maps, any journals players have sent me, and I still have a stack of character sheets the players left behind after a TPK last year.

I might still revive those and spring them at the new PCs as undead/insane/simply gone evil villains ...

I don't play frequently enough to have very many dead characters of my own. :p

Keeping Characters

I have 95% of my characters from the last 20 years that I have gamed from every game system that I have played. The only ones that I'm missing are ones that got lost or accidently thrown away.

I have close to 100 D&D characters that I have used and played over the years. Most of the ones that I like turn up as NPC's in later campaigns. Makes it easy when I want an NPC with a lot of detail and background but don't want to spend the time.

Most of those 100 characters for D&D also have 2 to 5 different versions. Each at a different point in their careers. The vast majority of the characters ended their play at between 9th and 12th level.

Nah. I never keep character sheets. But then I'm mostly GMing so not the big deal.

I DO keep reusing NPCs, locations and so on from campaign to campaign. I keep ending up changing gaming groups and so I get to reuse tons of stuff.

The first PC I ever played has been an NPC in pretty much every campaign I've ever run. Players keep running into him even though he never has anything to do with what's going on. He just turns up.

I have a lot of my old characters. Probably 70% of them. I even have an old Bushido and TMNT character from around 86-87. A fine vintage.

I keep just about everything from my GMing sessions. Once I become a computerized person I started transfering notes to word documents. I haven't started scanning maps and stuff but I probably will when I finally breakdown and get a scanner.

One thing I have is a book of the dead. Its made up of (mostly) all the PCs that have died in my campaigns. I have an old green sheet character sheet of a character I made for my little brother back in 82. The character was a fighter magicuser named Darrell Thunderbrow. He had a helmet that allowed him to cast lighting bolt at will.

Ah yes, I love going back and seeing what a Montyhaul/Munchkin DM/player back in those days.

I keep most of my character sheets. I have character sheets from games 17 years ago. I actually have several sheets from other players in that same game as well as my own.

As a DM, I have spiral notebooks that date back to 1986 or so, including most of my DM'ing notes, and I have archived all my campaign-related computer files since about 1989.

I have the majority of the material generated for all my campaigns past & present. Right down to the scrap notes in alot of cases. The notable exception is copies of many of my player's old characters, missing quite a few of those unfortunately :(
