Do you like anime?

I'm no great fan of the stuff I've seen. They seem to be cartoons pretending to be "high art".
The stuff I've seen seems to not be overly concerned with plots that make sense, or character motivation that I can understand.
Oh yeah, and don't forget demons raping schoolgirls.
The only japanese cartoon that I *really* liked was called Battle of the planets. It used to come on after school and was great. It was about a Team of Cybernetically Enhanced Orphans called G-Force. That was cool. It had a cool, understandable plot, complete with a series long story arc, something I was completely unused to at the time.

How is this different from the vast majority of american cartoons and sitcoms anymore?
Ahhh yes, hentai... Animes bastard cousin that gets dragged into any debate. Most of us DON'T watch hentai, actualy... echi, sure, hentai, no.
A few you might try that should be out in america either now or very soon (Most are licesnsed and in translation, if they are not out yet)

RahXephon - I'd go so far as to call this an eva ripoff, myself, but it stands on it's own merits anyhow.
Noir - Very cool... not for the little kiddies (The main characters are very cold-blooded (IE, not cutsey anime norm) assassins... not that it's hentai

Hellsing - This one I know for a fact is out. A very cool alternate take on Vampires, with some interesting notions about some of the major world churches too...
Witch Hunter Robin - Similar to Hellsing, kinda, but this one is about magic users in the modern day world
And I'd like to personaly give a nod to Hikaru no Go, though it might not be your cut of tea personaly... It's a GREAT show.
Yeah, anime has it's fair share of ho-hum or even down right junky shows... but, really, how is that different from america?

Asking, "Do you like anime?" is like asking, "Do you like books?" Anime varies wildly. Sci-fi, fantasy, historical samurai stuff, romantic comedy, genuine romance, dramas about honor and responsibility, comedy, and whacky artsy stuff that makes you contemplate the meaning of art and life. Very diverse.
And yes, when it's well done, I love it. In general, anime has one of the prettiest and cutest styles of animation out there.
My personal preferences are for humorous shows, but I still appreciate serious stuff (with a lot of humor included to lighten it up in general).
I dislike stuff like Akira (depressing and it mostly boiled down to 'science is bad'), Dragon Ball Z (original Dragon Ball is kinda cute and funny, but DBZ is the anime equivalent of G.I. Joe), or Ninja Scroll (it's an action flick, basically, nothing special).
I do like Neon Genesis Evangelion somewhat, but it's a muddle sort of storytelling. You can be artistic and compelling without being vague, and though I understand it's supposed to make you think, the ending ultimately is _too_ open to interpretation. Compelling it is, aye, but also confusing. And I can't tell whether Shinji ever has any sort of character growth.
I love stuff like Slayers, Tri-Gun, Cowboy Bebop, Dual, Martian Successor Nadesico, Vandread, Love Hina, and Gatekeepers. That runs the gamut from fantasy to 'western' to sci-fi to romantic comedy, but it's all generally light-hearted stuff that is fun to watch. I don't like the really dark, depressing anime (of which there's a lot).
As a previous poster said, yes, a lot of anime is crap. So is a lot of food, a lot of books, a lot of movies, and a lot of TV. Be informed, and don't buy the crap. Buy the stuff you'll like.
Although I've yet to see a real anime 'sitcom.' I suppose that might be a waste of the medium's resources.

See, Tsyr and I probably have very different tastes. I can appreciate that a lot of the stuff he lists is very well done (like Noir, very nicely done), but it's not my cup of tea. The best way to think of anime is to think of movies, with a wider palette of special effects. Animation can create alternate worlds a lot more easily than live-action movies can. Then, just find the types of movies you like, and you can probably find similar types of anime that you'll like.

Some of it is ok.
Overall- I don't think the art is very good, and many of them trying to imitate each other (big eyes, small mouths appearance of characters) bores me.
I have noticed that I find a lot of anime series start great, but after a few episodes- they crumble horribly; the Lodoss thing, Bubblegum Crisis, err.. some other one whose name escapes my mind atm.
