I marked yes, even though its not a yes, as I don't do it for security purposes. I do annotations, corrections and the like in my books. Shoot, it was interesting that I had someone pick up my book by accident and when he saw there were marks in it, actually commented that is was dumb to defile a book like that. I just wondered why he though that, but in the end decided it wasn't worth asking.

I don't write in my books I'm way too OCD to start doing anything of the sort but what I have done, and its worked great for me, is that I will actually transcribe part of a book i'm using into Word and type in my extra notes where I want them and I then print it out and place the sheets into a 3 ring binder that I keep with all my books so that I can have access to all my notes and everything stays organized. I also created an index table so that I can quickly lookup things I've already gone through, oddly enough i keep my notes int he exact same order as they appear in the books, go figure.

I initial my books with a black Sharpie on the front inside cover but just so it doesnt get mixed up with other peoples.
I usually just stuff the printed errata in the back but I have been known to just pencil in a word or two in a section I use a lot.

I'm not worried about stealing, as my group is made up completely of close friends, however I do put my name and date of purchase on the inside front cover in permanent marker. I also tend to mark pages (usually page 55), usually with my initails in very small print somewhere around the page number... just for added security.

I mark my books, but not for "anti-theft". It's anti-mixup. Books float around the table a bit during a session, and marking ensures that right books get back to the right people at the end of the night.

I agree entirely, esp. with books that everyone (or nearly everyone) brings to the table. I put a bookplate (basically, a sticker with a pretty picture that says "From the library of...", with a place to write my name) on the inside front cover, or blank first page, of all of my books. Adds that classy feel. ;)

Other than that, I don't write in my books.

I write in my books as I feel the need whether it's annotations, my name, oddball comments and so on. I agree that these are tools and not collector's items (even if I did make some good money off that Complete Necromancer's Handbook I sold at the Gen Con auction). My game books tend to get very beat up over the years out of use, though I do try to maintain them when they need it. It's not that I want them to be in near-mint condition so much as I just want to be able to pull them off the shelf in 15 years to use them again. :D

I put my name in all of my books, if only because my players also tend to have copies, and I don't want someone to leave their book with me, nor do I want to have a book of mine march off into oblivion.

It still happens, but less frequently, now.
