countable] an agreement made between two people or groups in which each side gives up some of the things they want so that both sides are happy at the end

The example player is not giving up anything they have to give and is the only one walking away happy in the end.
That's wrong. The player is in fact giving up something he has to give, and that's what he desires to happen. He's giving up on part of what he desires to happen. You keep acting as if entitlement is required in order for compromise to happen. It isn't and never has been.

Oh, and compromise doesn't have to leave both sides happy. It can also leave both sides unhappy or even one side happy and the other unhappy, but okay with the compromise since both sides are getting at least part of what they want.

My assumption is that the choice is strictly between one version of RAW or the other, for whatever element is in question - in other words, which book are we using if-when we have to look this up. Any resolution other than "this version" or "that version" gets into houseruling, which is fine but is also outside the assumed framework.
Why? House rules are the backbone of a ton of D&D compromises. Why assume that they are not a part of a discussion on compromise.

No. When I pointed out the unreasonable problems caused for the GM by house ruling a mix n match edition I got told that it's not for me to decide because there was some form of compromise or those problems are simply ignored.
Correct. You cannot decide that for other people. You can only decide it for yourself. The issue here is that you are presenting it as some sort of universal truism and it just ain't. For some there are no unreasonable problems, or even problems at all by mix and matching the 5e and 5.5e.

I don't get to decide my own opinion of what is (un)reasonable and reasons for it if other people are involved in the discussion where it comes up? Should I assume that the next step is to tell me I'm wrong because wotc did surveys to determine what is the most fun or something?

the first three sentences of what you quoted already answered your ‘question’…

no, the next step should be to actually read the posts you are replying to first ;)

;)... I thought I'd keep up the trend of the post being quoted totally ignoring what was written in the quoted post and responding to a slightly different point since there's really no other reason to say what amounts to little more than this when someone points out what they feel is an unreasonable position and explains why.

You can if it applies to you, just like those surveys are asking what is most fun for YOU. You don't get to decide those things for others. You don't get to tell me what I find to be unreasonable or fun.

When you are telling it to me I absolutely get to tell you why your unreasonable position is rejected for being unreasonable. That's the cost of sharing your opinion.

Mod Note:
The current head-butting doesn't seem to be getting anyone anywhere.

You might want to choose to stop, before a method of stopping it is externally applied.
