Do you recall a nostalgic D&D picture/illustration?

1st edition DMG, Emirikol the Chaotic on horseback riding down a street, glancing back and firing a Magic Missile at one of his pursuers. I think that was what spell it was, anyway. :)

The Temple of the Frog map in the old Blackmoor D&D supplement. Very cool; I got the module put out later just to have an easier to use version of that map.

Two images come to mind

The first is the picture in the Monster Manual of the Type V Demon, I think that same pic also appeared in one of the D & D Suppliments. Eldritch Wizardry, perhaps.

the other was the cartoon in the DM's guide of the guys dressing up like rats to sneak in to the rat god shrine. And one guy says to the other "This had better work!"

I guess that's the one I'm most nostalgic of, as well.

Is there a single picture or illustration in any D&D product that you are particularly fond of...perhaps for nostalgic reasons?

For example, my favorite is a picture from G123 Against the Giants. It is a picture of female giants in working a kitchen -- one is about to clobber a poor orc slave with a frying pan for spilling something. The Orc has its ears pull back and appears to be about to squeal. Just seeing that one brings back fond memories for me.

Is there are single picture/illustration that sums up D&D for you?

Emerikol (sp?) the Chaotic from the 1e DMG. I loved that old Erol Otus art

There is a pic in the old 1e DMG which was done by Darlene Pekul, which is done in the process in which ink is panted onto paper and is scratched away to make the picture (I cannot for the life of me recall what the term for it is; it's something I learned long ago, so I really should know it). It's of a wizard on horseback along a coastline under a cloud-laden sky, a viking longship plowing through the waves in the background. It's a moody, mysterious picture, which helped give another dimension to what D&D seemed to be about.

"Scratchboard Illustration" :)

My ultimate fav is the full page in the PHB of the dwarven/halfling party rounding a bend in a stairwell and encountering a magic mouth on one of the columns. The punchline is a very subtle pair of sinister eyes awaiting them in the descending darkness. A classic.

The treasure hunters in the back of the MM is a goodie too.:)

It was reprinted in the 2e PHB, 2nd printing (Black books)

There's a picture of an adventuring party rounding a spiral staircase. Just as the reach the landing (in the foreground of the picture), a magic mouth appears and begins to speak...

The cover of the Erol Otus Basic/Expert set. It's got it all... fighter, wizard, dragon, dungeon, subterranean lake, and of course Erol Otus style! I remember when I first realized that the Expert Set had the same picture as Basic, but expanded it, and how cleverly metaphorical that seemed to my teenage mind. :)
