Of course not.

WotC Customer Service is for dealing with shipping problems and the like.
It's clear that they don't have the faintest idea when it comes to rules. (Remember the Sword and Fist Halfling Outrider fiasco?)

I have mailed the Sage (Skip Williams) a couple of times, and recieved a couple of answers, one of which is now in the FAQ (with my wording, no less).

Even though Williams is no longer at WotC, he still answers questions in some sort of official way. He currently has tsrsage@aol.com, according to the latest FAQ.

I e-mailed custserv once, when Sword & Fist came out, but IIRC their answers were pretty much off-base so I've discounted them as a source for rules questions since - I like my own judgment, amplified by rules discussions here, much better.

I did email a Wizards type today with a Magic: the Gathering question, but instead of custserv I used the "Saturday School" judge.

i have a couple questions in the FAQ over at WotC.

yeah, i use the chat rooms there too.

why not? i'd rather have them explain what they were thinking then try and guess what they meant.

Were you satisfied with the information you received?

Honestly?

I've never emailed Custserv myself, but the answers I've seen other people post are wrong more often than not - frequently directly contradicting a/ the rules as written, b/ FAQ answers, and c/ other answers by Custserv to the same question, sometimes on the same day, sometimes by the same person, and sometimes even within the same message.

I've seen the sentiment expressed before that a few cents' donation from everyone who uses Custserv would cover the costs of buying a set of rulebooks for the Custserv department to read...

My own theory is that the service is useful... as long as you can boil your question down to a yes or no answer. That way, just assume the opposite of the response you get to be true, and you're likely to have the right answer.

(One of my favourites was of the form "Is the answer A or B?", and the response was "Neither; it's B.")

... well, you did ask.

From what I've seen so far, I know the rules much better than most of the people answering the questions for WotC do, many people on this board know the rules an order of magnitude better, and I don't remember the last time I agreed with one of the Sage's interpretations of the rules - so all around, a big no.

Mmm...donuts. Is there anything they can't do? -Homer Simpson

As for the topic, I've never used Wizard's customer service. Never had the need to do so.
