OK -- I have a wizard that is taking Sudden Maximize as his next feat (6th level) and wants to use it to metamagic Fireball.

This means that at 6th level he can do 36 damage fireball without any extra cost to spell level? Granted he can do it only once per day, that seems like a lot, especially when you start talking about spells like Disintegrate. That's a lot of damage at once.

Kinda makes BBEG battles less fun.

In Soviet ENWorld, Metamagic Feats use YOU!

Which is why you don't tell him which one is the BBEG fight. To be fair, a diplomancer build could handle the entire campaign without combat, if you run Diplomacy RAW.

Very rarely. Paying two different costs to get a result that might be almost as good as if I did not pay the costs at all does not thrill me.

Just as an FYI, you can't Chain a Disintegrate

Chain Spell only works on spells with a single 'Target:' entry.

Ray spells (Disintegrate, Enervation, etc) are 'Effect: Ray' and no 'Target:' entry and so are not eligible for Chain Spell. You need Split Ray instead.
Well, rays are ranged attacks, and ranged attacks target one creature.

Otherwise, please find me a use of the Chain Power metapsionic feat in the XPH/SRD :). Energy Missiles doesn't count because it already can have multiple targets.

Aside: Chain Power might beat out Monkey Grip as worst feat ever. Monkey Grip at least has its uses if you can make yourself or your weapon Colossal.

Well, they don't make everything better (the classic example being Heightened Fireball vs. DBF.) It's just a question of whether or not you prefer to use the spells that work well with metamagic feats and whether or not it's worth the feat slots to you (an example being Heighten Spell with Shadowcraft Mage.)

Rays are still not Target spells, however. You could target one opponent with a fireball, but you still don't Target him. Catch the difference?

I fail to see how a psionic feat has any relevance to metamagic feats.

No, the worst feat ever that doesn't 'cheat' would be weapon specialization (net). The worst set of feats that could be called 'cheating' would be a non-spellcaster (e.g. human fighter) taking a metamagic feat like silent spell without ever taking a spellcasting class. :)

The relevance is that Chain Power can't be applied to any power in existence at the time it was printed if spells with Effect: Ray are not considered single-target spells. See if you can find a single target energy power in the SRD that's not a ray.

metamagic becomes powerful when hitting epic lvl's

fortify, highten, maximize, empower, silent, lattice, still and quicken

using silent still and quicken you can give up a permanent spellslot of up to 8 slots higher to use the inate feat to get the spell as a spell like abbilety at will.

combine empower and maximize to get 150% dmg from a spell making a fireball hit for 90 dmg.
ok its not a lvl 3 spell but a lvl 8 but hey find dmg dealing spells from 6 and up is hard.
especialy in a 20' raduis
take delayed blast fireball a 7th lvl spell doing an average dmg of 60
this all is calculated as a 20th lvl caster of course

metamagic is what makes a caster powerfull
though that depends on the playstyle of the party
other feats are often better in a rolplaying party instead of hack and slash.
