Do you warn your PCs before they do something stupid?

Give them the obligatory eyebrow and 'Are you sure?'. After that, they're on their own (they were warned dude) :) .

Had a lizardman taken down by a gnome SWAT team because he was walking from shop to shop asking "Do you kow where I can get some poison?".

I try very hard not to give anything away when players attempt something stupid, but I'm afraid the twinkle in my eyes and grin on my face give away the situation just in time for them to stop my fun. ;)

Heh, I knew a GM who had a sign that read Funeral in Progress that he would place on the table and ask 'are you sure?' I only met one player who did the action anyway... the character died.

I borrowed it a bit, and have a Reaper miniature of Charon in his boat that I place on the table at opportune moments.

I love this idea. Usually my players might get the idea when I ask: "is that your final answer?" or "Are you sure?" - if the evil laughter hasn't already tipped them off.
 

I have to admit, that sometimes I warn my player's from doing something, mainly for my own benefit, not theirs. Imagine the adventure is all going according to plan, and then a PC wants to do something that is both unwise and could "de-rail" the adventure and send it into a direction that I would rather not go into doing the session.

So, to save myself from the extra "work", I try and warn the PC that taking a particular action may not be in their best interest, because in my head I'm thinking, "if he does that, he may end up dead or in jail and the party will have to spend the rest of the session dealing with the mess that was started." ;)

My answer is a wishy-washy "it depends".

If it's something incredibly shockingly stupid, then I'll likely warn them. Also, I'll warn them if I think that I didn't explain the situation well enough to them, didn't describe what their characters are seeing very well, or if I think their characters should know based on the campaign and campaign world.

Otherwise, they do what they do.

Then you need to wear shades and cover your mouth like you're gonna either cough or fake thinking, although that'd give ya away.... ;)

If they can't figure out what's up after the maniacal laughter, then they're as dense as lead.....

You'd think he'd have asked for an INT check....

But then my DM didn't ask for a WIS check for my cleric when I, the player, forgot a piece of doctrine she (the character) wouldn't have forgotten...... :uhoh:
