Does 3.5e break the Epic Level Handbook?

I was thinking of picking up the Epic Level Handbook, but I'm not sure if it will be practical with 3.5e coming out in a few months. Do you think there will be enough changes that the Epic Level Handbook will need major errata? Or is it different enough that the changes in 3.5e will not effect epic level play in any way?

Well, I haven't been keeping careful track of the 3.5 threads, but the only Epic level invalidation I came across is apparently spelled out in Savage Species. As I understand it, the "Beast" monster designation has been removed, with creatures being redefined as Magical Beasts or Animals....so the "Beast Wildshape" feat would become unnecessary.

Other than that, I can't see it affecting terribly much. Epic rules were something in high demand that took quite a while to come out. I can't see WotC invalidating them after only a year.

I don't even think that's possible. The ELH broke itself.

Oh, tish tosh! :)

I think the answer is the same for all the books. What will happen is that some things will not be compatible (a la the "Beast Wildshape") but 95% of the book will likely still be very useable. After all, most of the changes are minor ones (DR specifications, Wilderness Lore DC's become Survival DC's, threatened area for larger monsters, etc.)

I seriously doubt we will see the skill DC's change, nor 99% of the feats, or the magic items section.

Thanks, thats what I figured. From what I have heard, Epic levels seem to be fairly different from normal advancement, etc., so I'm not surprised it won't be affected too much. I'm not too sure if I want to get it now or not though. I'm going to be ordering Savage Species, and was looking at another book to avoid shipping costs. I don't know if I will be using EPH any time soon. I was shying away from other splatbooks because of 3.5e, but I'm not even sure if I will bother with 3.5e at all. Aagh, what a mess.

Any good book recomendations?

I can honestly say the ELH was the biggest waste of money I ever spent on a RPG system. It falls apart, balance-wise, pretty quickly. You can't even build a 40th level character that has an AC within twenty of his to-hit. Well, you can, but it's damn hard. Also, the epic spells are dumb.

My suggestion is see if you can borrow it from a friend, and then try it out. Build a few characters with it. You'll see what I mean pretty quick, I think. D&D just wasn't made to scale up that high, and it shows in the ELH.

Build a character at level 40, and you'll see how things can be unbalanced. Advance a character through 40 levels of play, and you'll see how it works.

The ELH comes highly reccommended. I've not yet regretted having it.
