Does any one else miss Planescape?

Well, IMo Planescape was the most innovative and interesting setting that they ever published.

Who knows? We might see it again in official form, if a company buys up the license. Until then, I'm happy to continue supporting ps3e.com - though I'm hoping we'll see a return to regular updates sometime soon, Ashy? I understand you're a busy man, but surely some of the project director people should have updated by now?

Personally I thought PS was bad in a Plan 9 from outer space way. Especially how how they talked like chimney sweeps from England...

And the artwork looked cartoonish. Sort of like that somewhat awful movie, Wizards...

What's wrong with playin' around with ideas? :)

And as for the demons/devils...you didn't voice a specific complaint, so I'm going to make the leap of logic and think that they loose some of their mystic evil kewlness if they're walking around city streets and such.

To an extent, you're right. And if you want dark, brooding uberfiends just waiting to snack on the souls of mortals, more power to ya. :) If your demons or devil are the nameless darkness, lurking in the shadows, that's perfectly okay.

But I do like what PS did with them. It made them more than one-dimensional. Of course, sometimes you *want* them one-dimensional, but I prefer to think of an Osyluth or something to have "off time." It transformed them from things that go bump in the night and eat the bad kids to things that are all the more frighting because they do that, and they can still walk around in the major city like they don't.

*shrug*. I could go on. But, yeah, PS does de-scarify the fiends a little bit. IMHO, it makes 'em all the more scary, but I understand that's not for everyone. :)

Well the whole Asmodeus as an ubergod was stupid IMO. As is the Blood War. Why would demons & devils war for eternity over law & chaos? Why don't the lawful neutral and chaotic neutral entities battle? Seems foolish to me. But that's just me. I never played Planescape, as it wasn't the kind of setting I was looking for. I like a little more traditional types of settings like Greyhawk.

DUDE! You don't dis the DiTerlizzi! ;)

Okay, it's sketchy, but that's what I like about it. Gives it a whole "not fully developed/not really there" feel. Plus the dude had, like, a week to come up with it all. :)

Of course, I'm a fanboy, but I can't imagine what was so bad about Planescape that can't be put up to differences in style. Okay, you don't like the semi-british. No problem. It *can* be ignored, when you play, you know.

In fact, in the imaginary "City of Doors" guide, I wouldn't make it mandatory, but I would include perhaps a chapter or a few sidebars on it. No reason to clutter the rules with Sigil-speak, and you can ignore and/or change it if you want (as always).

Oh, and the chances of any company getting to do anything PS is pretty slim. Like I said in the other post, much of PS does depend on stuff copyrighted by WotC. So unless the MotP becomes OGL, you probably won't see much not put out by Ashy, Ken, and the rest of the Planewalker/Ps3e crew, the occasional DRAGON article, and, if my dreams are fulfilled, at least one book about philosophical groups. :)

I also wondered about The Blood War, it indicates that are much less celestials than fiends, for celestials don`t spend most of their time fighting each other. But I l think devils would have most of their hatred reserved for Eladrins, not demons.

I can't honestly say that I miss Planescape. There's a lot about Planescape that I liked - there was a sense of wonder and scale to the setting which I don't think any of the other TSR settings really had, for instance. I liked the Factions as a subtle replacement for alignment. Modrons are fun, and I enjoyed the rest of the races as well. And I've always liked the notion of the city at the center of everything.

On the other hand, there's a lot I never liked about Planescape - the cant was a silly notion, IMHO. It wouldn't have been as bad if it had been confined to Sigil, but the whole multiverse talking like 17th century Londoners snapped my disbelief suspenders something awful. I never liked the Factions giving out magical abilities as a signing bonus. The D&D classes seemed like an uneasy fit at times. And the whoel setting was way too tied to the Outer Planes for my taste. It's not that I think the Outer Planes should be reserved for high level characters, or anything like that - I just don't think the afterlife (or afterlives) are all that interesting, unless you're willing to make that the center of the game thematically.

Now if a new Planescape comes out, I'll buy it. But I'd be happier if it were a Planescape tuned to my particular tastes rather than a simple repeat of the original material. And that's soooo not going to happen.

I liked the idea of Planescape but I was never really impressed with the execution.

(Donning flame retardent undies)

I just always felt it was a munchkin playground.

Man that sounded snotty. Sorry.

Maybe I should say it just wasn't my cup of tea.

I really enjoyed PS myself, my favorite personal setting and one many of the other gamers I know enjoyed a lot.

Actually I ran a Plane Scape game not to long ago using 3rd Edition rules and my old source books. The monsters aren't difficult to converts, plus alot already has if you have the MM and Manual of the Planes.

I would like to see stuff come out for it again, but would only buy if it had new material or stuff that would be to difficult to convert into 3rd edition rules (nothing comes to mind offhand).
