Does anyone else think D&D 4th edition should be more like 2nd edition

I think you misunderstand- there has always been excellent support for psionics within the game as things expanded- you can find psionically active monsters in even the 1st Edition MM or Dieties and Demigods.

And even the 3Ed stuff is added material-not core.

...that's 1e, which does not exist to me, except as something I was sort of collecting for a while in the last couple of years. Talking about 3(.5)e. (Sorry, I probably should have mentioned that...)

Also, it's a possible trend. Not entirely sure it exists yet, but I think it might be possible. It's certainly the first new set of powers for 3.5 psionics in print by WotC that I've seen. The only other product to include psionic anything that I know of was Player's Guide to Faerun, and that had one lousy PrC.

No, I don't think D&D 4e should necessarily be 2e remade. But...

I abandoned AD&D as hopelessly out of date c. 1990. I found GURPS, which was my favorite system for a long time. Then I discovered a few things I didn't like about it, & my group tried a variety of other systems.

By the mid-1990s I'd started to become interested in more minimal & free form systems. I also started to regain some respect for classic D&D & AD&D. Unfortunately, I soon entered a gaming desert time.

When 3e came out, I was overjoyed. It looked like the remake of D&D I would've made. I also recognized a lot of my favorite concept from GURPS & other games. I was in love. After a year or two, I was getting frustrated with 3e, & I didn't know why. I picked up my old GURPS books again & rediscovered why I had loved it, but found it no more satisfying than D&D3e.

I was happy with classic Traveller. That may be part of what got me looking at classic D&D & AD&D again. I found a greater appreciation (thanks in part to Dragonsfoot, OD&Dities, & some other venues) for those games than I had had in years...heck, in a decade.

Additionally, I'm probably enjoying 3e games more than I was because, I think, I have a better understanding of what I like & dislike in systems.

I think D&D3e is as different as classic D&D & AD&D. They are different games, & they both deserve to coexist. I don't think the d20 system needs to die for AD&D to live anymore than I think AD&D needed to die for the d20 system to live. (Or that either needs to yield to GURPS...)

For many people (maybe most) Hackmaster is no substitute for AD&D. C&C is OK, but it's really yet a different variation on the same theme.

To WotC's credit, the oAD&D & AD&D2e books, the BECM sets & the RC are available as legal PDFs without DRM for a very reasonable price. It'd still be nice for them to support the old games better (many are unhappy with the quality of the PDFs) or allow someone else to do so. (Although, perhaps the Hackmaster agreement prevents such.)

Fans of the old games or those interested in them should take heart, however. Second hand copies of the materials are generally available & quite affordable. (Although there is some rare stuff that gets expensive.) C&C is soon to be released. Not only does it provide a system somewhat in the spirit of the older games, it's support materials should be easily adaptable to the old games.

Plus, we've got great places like Dragonfoot where we can support each other.

Not likely for two reasons:

First, supporting 1/2e will draw off support for current products which is financially stupid. Some fans might not like it, but it's a bad business decision and so won't happen. Hell, even with all of TSR's bad business decisions they did about the same thing when 2e was released too.

Second, the whole Open Gaming idea is based on a premise that too many systems dilute the RPG market too much. Going back and supporting previous editions of (A)D&D will run counter to that by adding more systems to the market.

Think of it as a sports metaphor.

Do you want to be the coach that replaces Bear Bryant (or Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden, Tom Osborne, Ara Parseghian etc)?

Of course not! It's much better to be the coach who replaces the poor schmuck who was unlucky enough to follow the legend.

1E was Tom Osborne and 2E was Frank Solich... ;)
ah, Tom. *sniff* tears up.....
