D&D 5E Does anyone know a good psion?

Does anyone know how that thing works in basic English as my attention is shot to heck and it looks rather complex on the surface?
Full caster base (d6 HD, light armor).
Gains spell points (psi points) equal to level, that refresh on a short rest. You can only spend a number of psi points equal to half your level (round up) on any one effect.
Gains a discipline based on subclass at 1st level, and a 2nd discipline at 3rd.
A discipline gives you one cantrip-level base power (like a Telekinetic Thrust or Astral Construct), that has additional effects when you spend more psi points on it. You also gain free points to augment this power at 5th, 11th, 17th (mimicking cantrip progression). A discipline also has "alternate effects", which are a small menu of spells you can cast with psi points (point cost = level).
Additionally, the class also gets access to a small selection of psionic talents, which are a list of Warlock-style psionic-themed invocations.

IMHO, Spheres of Power are a good idea, but they are pretty complex; you can see the idea originated with 3.5ed!
Pathfinder 1e, unless you're counting that as part of 3.5e D&D.

My feeling is that rather than Spheres being more complex, it's different such that if you started on the D&D slots system it takes time to learn. I don't recommend Spheres if people want something that sticks closer to core 5e D&D, especially if that something can use the same spell lists.

Just use the Aberrant Mind Sorcerer, swap all instances of Cha with Int, use the Spell Points variant from the DMG, but merge the Spell Point Pool with the Sorcery Point pool and allow them to freely draw from either pool to cast spells or use metamagic.

Poof, Psion.

I run is by her but we got a guy already thinking of being a sorcerer so that might be too much overlap or something.

mystic gets a bad rap for a reason, any idea on how kibble's works?
Its pretty well done, but like most of Kibble's work, there's a lot going on with the class and archetypes. If the player dont mind having a lot of button to push, its a good class.

There was a UA Psionic Wizard that could do the trick with the adequate spells list. Or the GOO warlock?

In sum, it is preferable for the 5e Psion to use normal 5e spell slots.

In 3e, having the Psion use spell points was a big deal, because the Psion became a solid alternative to vancian spellcasting.

But in 5e, all the casters are nonvancian. 5e slots are easy and spontaneous. Spell points dont matter any more, except for nostalgia.

The normal 5e spell slots work fine.

If a player wants to split up a high level slot into two lower level slots, on the fly, that is fine. And if the player wants to merge two low slots into a high one on the fly that is ok too.

Moreover, the official 5e spell points in the DMs Guide are kinda convoluted, and there are other balance issues with them.

If bothering with spell points, probably only use them for slots 1 to 5, but not for slots 6 to 9. Probably simplify the points to: slot-level + 1. So a slot 1 spell costs 2 points, and a slot 5 spell costs six points. Maybe cast an unprepared cantrip once for 1 point.

Agreed. Kibbles' stuff is definitely better for people who have some experience with 5e; it's more modular and less push button. The Laserllama one I linked is closer to "WotC default" flavoring and mechanics.
