Does burning hands provoke an AoO?

Burning hands is a "Close" attack, so nope. No provoking.
Does that apply to all Close attacks? I thought I'd read somewhere that that was a primary difference between Close bursts and blasts -- blasts provoke OAs and bursts don't. Of course, I couldn't actually find the passage either way in KotS.

The Pre-release Rules Compilation uses the wrong terminology. It will say "close blast," not just "blast," and "area burst" instead of "ranged burst."

The categories are:
Melee—single target, doesn't provoke, attack a nearby creature.
Close—multi-target, doesn't provoke, attack nearby creatures, origin square is your square.
Ranged—single target, provokes, attack a distant creature.
Area—multi-target, provokes, attack distant creatures, origin square is far away.

It's not a burst/blast thing. Ranged and Area attacks provoke; Melee and Close attacks do not.

So anything with a description of Close [blah] does not provoke.

Hmm... Mouseferatu I dunno if you be able to answer this. But since such terminology questions are fairly common. Does the PHB or DMG (or both) have some sort of Glossary for quick summaries of such things?

So you know all terms like; Attack, Damage, Shift, Close, Burst, etc.

Hmm... I think I can answer this, since other people have already talked about how the book is organized.

There's not a glossary in the PHB. But, I don't think you'll miss it. Why?

1) The book is incredibly well organized. All the types of attacks are discussed in one place in the combat chapter; all the conditions are discussed in one place; and so forth. And most of the individual sections of the chapter are alphabetical, so if you need the rules for "charge," you know you'll find them after "bull rush" but before "grab."

2) There's a pretty comprehensive index.

Thanks :)

Hopefully that means too, it be alot easier to make my own too (or may not even need it at all, like you said). Hmm... Or maybe the DM Screen will have one (wishful thinking).
