I'm going to go with a variation on the old Champions falling damage rules (falling doesn't cause damage, hitting the ground on the other hand). Getting treasure isn't necessarily fun, but what you do with that treasure usually is.

First, it's always fun to have money and be able to spend it. Yes, certain campaigns don't focus on that at all. However, the occasional session of spending your money when you hit the jackpot can be great fun. It's especially fun when you can buy property (houses at low levels, keeps at higher level). It's fun for exploring your character.

Then there are the magic items. Having and exploring the abilities of magic items can be a lot of fun.

Getting treasure can't make a game fun. If all you do is show up to the session and the DM hands out piles of treasure then you go home, I wouldn't consider that a fun game. But, that's not saying a whole lot. The flip side is that an (unmodified) D&D game that doesn't have much treasure will probably be less fun than a game that gives out a decent amount of treasure, simply because the game system is built around a certain amount of power coming from one's gear.

Yes, I think treasure is a part of D&D's fun. I voted "mostly", in the sense that you can have adventures ending without particular treasure, but generally, this is a part of the game that satisfies me. I like the mystery of new items, their history and specificities. I like magic items.

Yes. Especially if i feel like I've earned through good strategy or through a good hard fought battle. Even a good juicy tidbit of info is good treasure to me if earned.

Besides isn't DnD all about fame FORTUNE and glory anyway? ;)

No. I do not need treasure to have fun. Treasure is only a perk in campaigns. Our group does one shots at least twice a month and that is on top of the two campaigns we are playing right now, one every other week.

Treasure is an element of a fun game, but it's definitely the least important one, and in fact I wish it was considerably less prevalent. D&D is entirely too much about equipment rather than the character IMO, and has been from the beginning.

On the other hand, the occasional really-cool-just-right-for-my-character bit of loot does make me light up like a Christmas tree. A unique plot item, a weapon with a name and history, that kind of thing ... just not, say, another +1 whatsit of whatever.

I voted "No" because I don't really care about getting treasure. The balance problems caused by lack of treasure in a standard D&D game, on the other hand...

Getting treasure is always fun, but it's not the only kind of fun in an RPG. I'm happy as long as it's at least possible to gain treasure, if that's what I am after, in a campaign.
