Does helpless = willing?

Simple question - does being helpless mean you're a willing target? What about being reduced to 0 hitpoints?

In other words, if I want to stage a magical kidnapping in an adventure I'm running, can I have the attacker cast a sleep spell and then teleport the target away? Does it matter if the sleep is magically generated? Failing that, can he just beat the target into a pulp first and then teleport him away?

I'm tempted to rule that helplessness or unconsciousness does equal willingness (or that willing is the default state), but I'm a little wary for crazyness that can crop up from this.

Thoughts? Or is there a better method for accomplishing this that I'm missing?

Being helpless does not mean you're considered willing, but being unconscious does, so the sleep spell/severe beating plans both work.

The rules spell this out quite specifically:
Some spells restrict you to willing targets only. Declaring yourself as a willing target is something that can be done at any time (even if you’re flat-footed or it isn’t your turn). Unconscious creatures are automatically considered willing, but a character who is conscious but immobile or helpless (such as one who is bound, cowering, grappling, paralyzed, pinned, or stunned) is not automatically willing.

Awesome. I knew I was missing something in the book. Thanks for the quick answer!

Note that there's a difference between being a willing target, and electing to forego a Will save.

The Teleport trick works, because the spell doesn't allow a save; it merely requires that the target be willing, and 'the unconscious are always willing'.

You couldn't, however, beat someone unconscious and then cast Dominate Person to get around the saving throw; they'd still get a Will save despite being unconscious.

I tried that one before. My girlfriend wouldn't buy it ;)

Honey, you were asleep. I thought it was ok.
