Does it stack? 2 gold stars for the oversight!

How about

you can't stack that unnamed bonus if you take the feat twice

Sage forgot about toughness I guess. I especially like how he says it's ALWAYS true. He should know by now to be very careful with that word.
Toughness doesn't grant "a +3 bonus to hit points", but rather gives "+3 hit points". That's not even a bonus ;)

Or perhaps he was just under the impression that people would be smart enough to realize that if a feat specifically stated that it stacked with itself, it would override the general rule? After all, that's true with all rules. Specifics override general.
Then he shouldn't use the word "always".

And flyspeck, I see a "+" there...looks like a bonus to me.

But technically it isn't. Unless, of course, there are rules about "hit point checks" :)

Seriously, toughness doesn't grant an unnamed bonus, because it isn't named a bonus (not even an "unnamed not named bonus bonus") - and neither should it.

The "+" alone isn't a sure sign of a bonus. What you gain from a high Constitution score isn't "a bonus to your hit points", it's part of your hit points (just as those gained by the toughness feat) - nevertheless creature stats read (for example) "8 d8 +16".

True, one shoud almost never speak in absolutes. But as others have shown, Toughness doesn't grant a bonus. So even if it didn't say it stacked with itself, it would still stack with itself.

Except (from the 3.5 SRD)
If a character has the same feat more than once, its benefits do not stack unless indicated otherwise in the description.
So it wouldn't ;) But seriously, aren't there any self-stacking feats out there that grant bonuses?

I'm awarding two gold stars to the person that notices my favorite oversight from the Sage's recent 'Does it Stack?' / 'Rules of the Game' 4 part article. Hyper - I *know* you're all over this one ...

Hmm... I've been pretty happy with these so far, although I really disagree with his "BAB and base save bonuses aren't true bonuses"... they're a positive modifier to a die roll, they've got "bonus" in the name, they're about as bonussy as it gets!

I could have gone for having bow/arrow bonuses and masterwork/magical bonuses explicitly pointed out, but in 3.5 they both follow the intuitive rule anyway (they're all enhancement bonuses, so they don't stack), so it's not strictly necessary.

So I'm not sure what you're getting at...
